Nigeria’s democratic space has once again been animated by controversy—this time surrounding the leadership crisis within the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and the subsequent actions of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). Predictably, accusations have emerged, with critics alleging bias, interference, and political manipulation.

Yet beneath the noise lies a more fundamental issue—one that demands sober reflection rather than emotional reaction: Are we holding INEC accountable for a failure, or for fulfilling its legal obligation?

    The Legal and Procedural Questions

The facts, as presented, raise troubling procedural and legal inconsistencies within the ADC itself.

First, the question of authority: if a National Chairman resigns, can he continue to act on behalf of the party days or weeks after that resignation? In principle, the answer is no. Once resignation takes effect, the authority attached to that office ceases, except where there is a clearly defined transitional arrangement. Any official correspondence made outside that framework inevitably raises questions about legitimacy.

Second, the issue of delayed communication. If, as claimed, a key party official resigned in May but the electoral body was only notified in July, such delay undermines the credibility of the process. Political parties are expected to maintain transparency and promptly communicate leadership changes to INEC. A two-month gap is not just a procedural lapse—it opens the door to suspicion, contradiction, and potential manipulation.

Third, the matter of succession. In most party constitutions, including those of major Nigerian political parties, the Deputy National Chairman assumes leadership in an acting capacity upon the resignation of the Chairman. If, at the time of the Chairman’s resignation, the Deputy had not formally stepped down, then the line of succession should have been clear and automatic.

These are not trivial technicalities. They go to the heart of organizational order, legal compliance, and institutional credibility.
INEC and the Limits of Its Role
It is important to restate a basic principle of electoral governance: INEC is not an arbitrator of internal party politics. Its role is administrative and regulatory, not discretionary.

    The Commission acts based on:
    Official communications from political parties
    Party constitutions and established procedures
Binding court orders where disputes have been adjudicated
To expect INEC to go beyond these parameters is to invite arbitrariness into a system that is meant to be governed by law.

Indeed, a contradiction has emerged in the public discourse. If INEC had ignored the documents submitted to it or refused to comply with a court directive, it would have been accused of bias or dereliction.

Yet, by acting in accordance with its mandate, it now faces the same accusations.
This inconsistency suggests that the issue may not be INEC’s actions, but rather dissatisfaction with the outcomes those actions produced.

The Danger of Sentiment Over Substance

Democracy thrives on the rule of law, not on selective outrage. When legal processes are interpreted through the lens of political convenience, institutions are unfairly weakened and public trust is eroded.

The ADC leadership dispute is, by all indications, rooted in internal mismanagement—contradictions in communication, questionable timing, and procedural ambiguities. These are issues that should be addressed within the party framework or resolved through the courts, not projected onto INEC as institutional failure.

Young Nigerians, in particular, must resist the temptation to adopt narratives that prioritize sentiment over substance. Holding institutions accountable is essential—but such accountability must be grounded in facts, law, and consistency.

    Conclusion

As Nigeria moves steadily toward another electoral cycle, the strength of its democracy will depend not just on the actions of its institutions, but on the fairness with which those actions are judged.

INEC’s responsibility is clear: to uphold the law, reflect legally recognized leadership structures, and maintain regulatory order. Political parties, on their part, must ensure internal coherence, transparency, and adherence to due process.

Democracy cannot function where the rule of law is applied selectively or discarded when inconvenient. If Nigeria is to make meaningful progress, both institutions and citizens must remain anchored in principle—not perception.

  • Hon. John Ogunmoyero as a beacon of hope

In a world where genuine acts of philanthropy often go unnoticed, it is disheartening that society frequently overlooks those ordained by God to serve humanity selflessly. Instead, we sometimes find ourselves drawn into individuals whose charitable deeds are driven by personal ambitions rather than a true passion for humanity. Unfortunately, such leaders, lacking empathy and a genuine humanitarian spirit, often fail to deliver on their promises, leaving us disillusioned.

True philanthropists, however, are rare gems. They possess a divine calling to care for others, impacting lives positively even with limited resources. Yet, they are often celebrated and sidelined when it comes to leadership opportunities. One such individual who exemplifies this rare breed of selfless service is Hon. John Ogunmoyero.

Without holding any government position, Hon. Ogunmoyero has touched countless lives, particularly in his constituency, Ondo East Local Government Area of Ondo State. Through his unwavering commitment to the welfare of his people, he has provided employment opportunities and supported numerous families. His actions speak louder than words, reflecting a deep-seated passion for uplifting others and fostering community development.

Imagine the transformative impact someone like Hon. Ogunmoyero could have if given the platform to serve in government or represent his people in a legislative chamber. His dedication, empathy, and proven track record of service are precisely the qualities needed in leadership today.

As we look toward the future, it is imperative that we recognize and support individuals like Hon. Ogunmoyero, those who have demonstrated a genuine commitment to humanity. Let us collectively appreciate and elevate such leaders who, with or without a title, continue to make significant contributions in the society.

In 2027, there should be no going back. It is time to give the mantle of leadership to those whose actions have consistently proven their devotion to the people. May God continue to strengthen Hon. Ogunmoyero and others like him in their noble pursuit of making the world a better place.

REFORMATION IS NECESSARY ACROSS NIGERIA, NOTHING IS FUNCTIONING AS BENEFIT FOR THE PEOPLE

    By Prince Emorioloye Owolemi

    New Year Message

Nigeria, a nation of millions, is governed and poorly served by a mere 0.5% of its population, a reflection of the dysfunctional autocratic democracy we currently practice.

It is unfortunate that politicians campaign against each other, promising change, only to perpetuate the same failures they initially decried upon assuming office. This cycle has made it clear that nothing in Nigeria is praiseworthy without significant reformation.

In this regard, the reformation of the youth system is imperative. Youths are the backbone of any society, capable of either perpetuating evils or championing good deeds when properly guided and encouraged. However, the democracy we practice in Nigeria is far from ideal. It thrives on natural justice, where power rests solely on positions and the exploitation of communities.

To truly reform Nigeria, we must start from our communities. Reforming your immediate environment creates a ripple effect, leading to a collective transformation of the nation. It is illogical to attempt to build outside one’s community while neglecting the foundation within. Only when you reform your community can you earn the trust to effect change beyond it.

The existing system is a recipe for calamity without reformation. Over the years, I have approached development differently, focusing on long-term benefits for the people, regardless of the time it takes.

President Tinubu’s policies, though controversial, signify a form of reformation. Many have been adversely affected due to a lack of preparedness for these changes. Reformation is never easy, especially for those accustomed to benefitting from irregularities. However, it is a necessary adjustment to modify societal wrongs.

A critical area of concern is the role of youth organizations. These associations, recognized and empowered by the government, must serve as the first line of internal security within their communities. Instead, many have turned into platforms for violence and crime. When leaders of youth associations are empowered without ensuring the collective commitment of their members, the result is disillusionment and criminality. This situation must be condemned.

Empowering only the leaders of youth groups while others are left to become tools for violence is detrimental. Youths are the major stakeholders in their communities and must prioritize public interest over personal gain.

As we prepare for 2025, it is vital to embrace the overdue reformation that Nigeria desperately needs. Change is inevitable, and it is time to align ourselves with the transformative processes required to build a better nation.

  • Dear Youth of AKURE South Local Government,

I write to you today as both your Chairman and a fellow member of the youth community in our local government. I understand your concerns and frustrations regarding the challenges we are facing in our economy. It is evident that times are tough, and the desire to protest and bring attention to these issues is completely valid.

However, I urge you to consider the consequences of resorting to protest as the only means of expressing our grievances. History has shown us that peaceful protests can quickly turn into opportunities for those with malicious intent to sow chaos and destruction in our communities. We cannot afford to let this happen again, especially considering the setbacks we experienced in the aftermath of the End SARS protests.

I implore you to channel your energy and passion into more constructive avenues. Let us opt for dialogue and engagement with the government as a means to add.

    Hon. Gbenga Fasua

Dr. Olumuyiwa Adu, a Nigerian politician of Akure descent, has made a profound impact on the political landscape of Akure, Ondo State, and Nigeria at large.

His political journey began when he emerged as the standard-bearer of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the Akure North/ Akure South Federal Constituency bye-election in 2022.

These challenges are not unexpected especially for a man with track records of spectacular achievements through dint of hard work and God’s benevolence.

The legal luminary was the Managing Attorney of Legal Point Limited for many years before he returned to Nigeria LNG Limited in direct employee capacity as a Lead Advisor having been earlier appointed in 1995 as a Security Consultant to a Consortium of Technip of France, Strampogheti of Italy, Kellogg of US and JGC of Japan otherwise known and addressed as TSKJ- The company that constructed Nigeria Liquified Natural Gas Plant in Bonny Island, Rivers State.

Olumuyiwa Adu has acquired more than 40 academic awards, 8 professional awards and many decorations for excellence and exemplary leadership attributes from local, national and International bodies. His array of accomplishments, political stardom and financial stamina have, expectedly drawn the envy of few adversaries who are afraid of and intimidated by his soaring profile and acceptability across political divides and societal strata.

However, it is evident that these attempts to tarnish his image will not deter him from his commitment to serve humanity.

His unwavering dedication to the welfare and progress of the people remains unshaken, and he continues to work tirelessly towards realizing his vision for a better society. His NGO, Olumuyiwa Adu Foundation is taking giant strides to assuage people’s suffering through kindness and unparalleled philanthropy.

Despite the challenges and obstacles he faces, Olumuyiwa Adu remains steadfast in his pursuit of excellence and his dedication to his people. He has represented an audible voice for the oppressed and voiceless citizenry.

His legacy continues to inspire and motivate others, and his impact on Ondo State politics will be felt for generations to come.

  • The internal discord within the All Progressives Congress (APC) following its primary elections raises concerns about its ability to present a united front has been of concern to major stakeholders in the party.

There had been several issues after the primary, varying from an aspirant going to court, some discrediting (the primary) on various social media platforms, but the good news is that seven of the aspirants had reconciled with the party’s candidate, Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa and work for his emergence come Nov. 16 election.

However, this current turmoil if not well managed presents an opportunity for the PDP to capitalize on by emphasizing the need for proven election winners and individuals with widespread public trust.

The recent developments within the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in Ondo State are shaping the upcoming elections in significant ways. The harmonization and strengthening of the party, as evidenced by the latest meeting attended by notable figures such as Gov. Ademola Adeleke of Osun State, Gov. Seyi Makinde of Oyo State and former Gov. Olusegun Mimiko of our dear state, among others, rooting for Agboola Ajayi as the candidate, underscore the importance of selecting a deputy with substantial political influence and electoral support, especially in the central region, which is poised to be a pivotal battleground, with the two candidates coming from the same region.

Furthermore, the financial prowess of key PDP figures like Gov Adeleke and Gov Makinde, coupled with Jegede’s ties to Atiku, potentially augmenting financial resources, adds another layer of complexity to an already competitive electoral landscape.

Additionally, the marginalization of Ondo-West within the current political framework merits attention. Despite being the second-largest local government in the state, it lacks significant representation in key positions. With notable figures such as Hon (Dr) Abiola Makinde PhD, and Dr Jibayo Adeyeye, all hailing from Ondo-West, possess impressive credentials and grassroots support, yet their community remains underrepresented.

As the election approaches, these factors underscore the intricate dynamics at play in Ondo State’s political arena, shaping the trajectory of the forthcoming electoral contest. It must also be noted that Agboola Ajayi comes from the Southern region of the state, same as the governor, APC must work more in the South and have a strong Deputy from the Central district.

In all of these, Ondo-West should be considered for the post of number two seat in the land with Akure having a sitting Minister, Senator and SSG as well as other juicy portfolios.

Also, Idanre has the current party chairman, Ondo-East has the Speaker. Ondo- West as the second largest local government in the Sunshine State has no stake in the current political setting and it can’t be said that Ondo-West doesn’t have qualified candidates.
With Hon. (Dr) Abiola Makinde PhD, the most performing Rep member in Ondo State by a mile, a grassroots politician with a proven track record who has delivered huge numbers for the party in elections. Then also, there is Dr Jibayo Adeyeye, a former two-term majority leader in the Lagos House of Assembly. IT will not be out of place to ask the party leadership to cede the Deputy Governor’s slot to Ondo-West.

Dr Balogun Akinyemi writes from Akure

  • Prince Emorioloye Owolemi on Criminal Behaviors, the need for security agencies to work with the NCC, and the need for sincerity among Security leaders

The president reacted to the incident at Delta State where many soldiers were ambushed and killed along with the Commanding Officer and other ranked officers, granting full authority to the Military chiefs to arrest the situation.
Condemnable as the event and many other situations like such across Nigeria, most especially in North East Nigeria, the president should be aware of criminals’ mode of dealings in Nigeria.

By granting full Authority to the army in Delta State, there are invariable means that the power of the constitutional Governor of Delta State is postponed indefinitely until the army is through unraveling the circumstances surrounding the killings and arrests perpetrators.
In a situation of Such, it is known as an indirect state of emergency.

The president should mandate the army and other security agencies across Nigeria to put sincerity first in all of their dealings to prevent the occasion of such in the future and prevent the youth from self-help.
It was obvious that the circumstances in Delta State should have been prevented if only the army acted with sincerity and Neutrality.

A reliable source for the unfortunate incident revealed that two communities in the incident were having a land dispute issues, and a favoritism path was played on the side of the army that was supposed to be neutral and make peace, so the army was reportedly killed two of the youth in the affected weak community in favor of other community that higher the service of the army.

Security agencies are meant to protect the lives and properties of individuals across the nation and to serve as Middlemen, not as Lord over civilians. Security agencies should be stopped from having authority over the people while enforcing the laws and making issues the way it supposed to be by listening to all parties and investigating before concluding while the competent court would still maintain a fair hearing.

Whenever criminals commit offensive activities, the lives of the people both the rich and the poor always become risky for the nation over persistent methods of arresting the situations.

In River State where a DPO was murdered by a group of suspected cultists, five identified youths helping the security agencies in unveiling the situation got lost, and several unidentified victims were in the hands of the suspect who was later murdered by the security agencies.

The fact for determination in such situations was whether or not the community people didn’t contribute to helping the security agencies before the incident occurred while the same community people still lost their lives thereafter by helping the security agencies to arrest the prime suspect.

In Nigeria, the criminals are well-connected with information and wiser than the security agencies. Immediately they committed their respective evils, they set several machinery outside to monitor security agencies’ movement and activities, and ever ready for those who came for them, they surrounded themselves with the people.
The people they surround themselves with will also be monitored by themselves if they make the move to signal security agencies, they will be murdered. If security agencies eventually traced any of the whereabouts, there would surely be an exchange of bullets counting several loss of lives on both sides and the innocent citizens they were surrounded.

There are no isolated areas in Nigeria coverage networking max, and the mentality of the military is that the criminals will not be reasonable to the extent of isolating themselves in a circle areas whenever they commit, they are wiser to the extent of preventing innocent citizens from leaving the community because they need both of the innocent citizens and the criminals themselves for treatment, foods, arms, and others.

As a Nigerian in the criminology aspect, I believe that the Government has failed both the people and the security agencies.
Whenever Criminals commit a kidnap, they usually call the families for ransom, and the calls map will appear in the communication network provider whether through the victim’s sim or the criminal’s sim, how come criminals usually get away with it without arrest?

If the office of the security Adviser to the president could detain foreign suspects and they eventually escaped from detention to the extent of leaving Nigeria for their country, it means the president himself is not safe in Aso Rock.

There is a need for urgent restructuring of the system, while the Government takes land ownership no individuals or community will have any claims for land across the country and the state governors move for compliance, a round table to unravel the security threat to the nation, and NCC needs of sincerity and monitoring are expected through this letter.

    Thank you, your Excellency
