    by

Two suspects, Bilyaminu Aliyu and Aminu Hukunci were on Monday arraigned in court by the Police over the lynching of a 200-Level Home Economics student of Shehu Shagari College of Education, Sokoto State, Deborah Samuel, on May 12.

The student was lynched to death over alleged blasphemy.

The suspects, co-students of the deceased, were arraigned at a Sokoto Chief Magistrates’ Court for their alleged participation in the crime.

They pleaded not guilty to the crime.

Prosecuting Inspector Khalil Musa told the court that an investigation was in progress as Deborah’s corpse was still in a morgue at the Usmanu Danfodiyo University Teaching Hospital, Sokoto.

Leading a team of 34 lawyers, the defence counsel, Prof. Mansur Ibrahim, applied for their bail on liberal terms, citing constitutional provisions and sections of the Administration of Criminal Justice Law.

The trial judge (name withheld for security reasons) reserved the ruling on the bail application and ordered the accused to be remanded at a correctional centre.

Before she was lynched, Deborah was accused of blasphemy on a WhatsApp chat platform set up by her coursemates and refused to retract her post after she was asked to pull it down.

A violent street protest followed the arrest of suspects linked to the lynching of Deborah as the protesters demanded their immediate release by security operatives.

Governor Aminu Tambuwal consequently imposed a 24-hour curfew on Sokoto metropolis on Saturday. He relaxed the curfew on Monday to be observed from dusk to dawn.

  • APC candidates ahead 2023:Blackmail Won’t Stop Party Supremacy, Face Your Campaigns, Akeredolu Tells Aspirants

    Press Statement

The attention of the Ondo State Governor, Arakunrin Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, SAN, has been drawn to an allegation that candidates are being propped to be imposed on the All Progressives Congress (APC) ahead of the party primaries.

This is a clear attempt by those with tainted party loyalty to box the APC into a state of helplessness in order to whittle down the supremacy of the party. Blackmail cannot stop the resolve of the party to enforce individual and collective discipline through democratic processes as enunciated in the various stakeholders sessions in the last three weeks.

The piece, authored by a disgruntled purported member of APC is deficient in facts and credibility. It is important to set the record straight and reassure genuine members of the APC in the state that Governor Akeredolu will rather give guardian and provide leadership than outright imposition of candidates on the party.

As an incurable democrat, Governor Akeredolu has always preached and supported fairness, equity and justice even in playing his leadership role in the affairs of the party in the state and at the national level. Governor Akeredolu is a loud voice in the struggle for fairness and the need for the party to walk the path of equity in the forthcoming elections. He will not lead any struggle that will defeat his beliefs and strong convictions.

Succintly, Governor Akeredolu shall crave for justice, equity and fairness even as the business of politicking within the APC in the state ahead of the forthcoming primaries has long been ceded to the party. The Chairman of the Party, Engr. Ade Adetimehin, the State Working Committee and Select leaders of the party across the State are fully in-charge of the party process and activities leading to the primaries.

It should be noted that Ondo APC is the only rancor-free chapter of the party in the Southwest. This was made possible by the fair and principled leadership of Governor Akeredolu. His commitment to a united party devoid of groupings and factions is unparalleled.

In clear terms, the party, through the committee set up in each of the senatorial districts, is the main and only driver of the processes that has birthed arrangements meant to stabilize the party and make it stronger, ahead of the forthcoming primaries.

Let it be known that Arakunrin Akeredolu is committed to the Party supremacy. This same principle produced the peaceful and rancour-free congress that was held in the state.

Members, leaders, as well as supporters of the APC, are, therefore, urged to disregard any rumour or sponsored articles of imposition by disgruntled purported members whose mission is to destabilize the party ahead of the coming elections. Aspirants must face their campaigns diligently.

    Signed:

    Richard Olatunde

Chief Press Secretary to the Governor of Ondo State.

These indubitable facts are the outstanding qualities that recommend Olorunmodimu Babatunde Ajayi (OBA) as the most qualified and community-friendly contender for the Ile-Oluji/Oke-Igbo State Constituency seat in our great party, All Progressives Congress (APC) under the leadership of the peoples’ Governor, Arakunrin Oluwarotimi Akeredolu SAN and our respected Party Chairman, Engr. Ade Adetimehin.

Tunde Ajayi’s consistency, commitment and total loyalty to the progressive fold since 1999, starting with Alliance for Democracy (AD) and all the way to All Progressives Congress (APC) is in the public domain to scrutinize. • Army, Ondo Amotekun burst Kidnappers’ Hideouts, Arrest 37 Suspects

    by

Following the massive joint patrol embarked upon by the Nigerian Army and men of the Amotekun Corps with other Security agencies, hideouts of kidnappers and other suspected criminal elements in Ondo State have been bursted

During the operations, no fewer than 37 suspected criminals were apprehended across the 18 Local Government Area of the State.

The patrol which was held simultaneously across the state, was part of efforts put in place by the state government to ensure a crime-free Eid-El-Fitri celebration.

The Ondo State Commander of Amotekun Corps, Akogun Adetunji Adeleye made this known while parading the suspects before newsmen at the Corps Headquarters in Akure on Tuesday.

According to him, the patrol which started since Friday last week, will continue till Thursday to make it a full week exercise to rid the society, Ondo and its environs of criminal elements.

“In the last five days, we have been able to harvest a number of criminals ranging from Armed robbers, suspected kidnappers, fraudsters, “Yahoo yahoo” boys and those that are engaged in nefarious activities.

“I want to commend men of the Nigeria Army from the 32 Artillery Brigade for their huge support likewise the Nigeria Police force, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) and of course, the Department of State Service (DSS) for their support towards ensuring that the holiday was crime free.

Akogun Adeleye who is also the Special Adviser to the Governor on Security matters, hinted, that during the operation, they busted a number of criminal activities such as kidnapping at the border town of Ondo state.

“As a result of the intense pressure we mounted on the Kidnappers, they were compelled to to release the victim and as at now, we don’t have any Kidnapped victim in the State.

“With Intelligence, we are able to follow grassroots intelligent report to clamp down on their hideouts and we will continue to do that inline with the policy of the Ondo State Governor, Arakunrin Akeredolu.

You will agree with me that he places a lot of premium on the security of lives and properties of residents in the state. Residents, commuters and business owners in the state are testifying, that the atmosphere is clear for smooth transactions.

“And for farmers, we want you to go back to your farms and we assure you of your safety. We also enjoin you to give us timely information to work with once you see suspected movement around.

“I also want to assure members of the public that the law will take its full course on all that are found to be culpable.

He, however, reiterated the smooth working relationship existing between the Army and the Amotekun Corps.

“I keep saying that there is no personal disagreement between the Army and members of the Ondo state security Network Agency. They were operational frictions which have been resolved and as you witness today, you would see that we are working closely together and we are happy working together.

“We don’t have any problem with the Army, they are playing the roles they are supposed to play in curbing crime in Ondo State and I tell you, that the Army and other security agencies have been actively involved in most of the major successful operations that are going on in the state”, Akogun Adeleye said

  • 200 Women benefited from ODSG Empowerment

    by

No fewer than 200 women across Ondo South Senatorial district have been empowered and trained on soap making, air freshener and germicides.

They were also trained on antiseptic, nail polish remover, insecticides and adire, which was said to be first of its kind in the area.

The women appreciated Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu for giving them dividends of democracy.

They gave the appreciation during the skills acquisition programme organized by Ondo State South Senatorial Women leader Mrs, Mosun Odukale held at Irele Civic centre.

Speaking on behalf of the beneficiaries, the Okitipupa Local government women leader, Mrs Temitope Omoniyi, thanked the government for the opportunity given to them and prayed that God in His infinite mercy bless the anchor bountifully and allow her to reap the fruit of her labour.

Earlier, the organiser, Mrs Odukale, described skills acquisition as the process of inculcating entrepreneurial ideas into the lives of the people to make life more meaningful to them and the society at large.

According to the Ondo south senatorial women leader, “One can also view skills acquisition as the art of learning to do something to earn a living and also to survive”.

“Ondo state south senatorial district is a region that covers six local government areas. The six local governments include; Irele, Okitipupa, Ese-Odo, Ilaje, Ile – Oluji/Oke-Igbo and Odigbo local governments.

“The dwellers of the above mentioned local governments are not excluded from the various challenges that are facing the two-third of the Nigerian populace; raging from unemployment to malnutrition and increase in criminal activities, which arose as a result of scarcity of jobs. Hence, this makes many people be living in abject poverty.

“It was the aforementioned challenges that aroused my interest to come up with an idea of a skills acquisition programme to reduce and alleviate poverty in the lives of the people in her region”. She explained.

She appreciated First Lady, Arabinrin Betty Anyanwu-Akeredolu, whom she described as her role model, who has been empowering our girls and women in Ondo State. “We all have to join her and move our women forward”, she said.

She therefore advised all beneficiaries to utilise the skills acquired to earn their living.
