  • Education: Don’t forget Ilaje LG, stakeholders appeal to Akeredolu

Stakeholders in Ilaje local governments have appealed to Ondo state governor, Arakunrin, Oluwarotimi Akeredolu not to forget them in his commitment to the development of primary schools in the area.

In an interview with our correspondent in Igbokoda, headquarters of Ilaje local government, the Nigeria Union of Teacher, (NUT) Branch Secretary, Ilaje local government, Mr. Abayomi Goodluck, commended the state governor on how far he has gone in the education sector especially in the area of improving  primary schools education.

He called the attention of the governor to the fact that  Ilaje LG has  yet to benefit from the governor’s midas’ touch in the sector .

“All schools in Ilaje local government are facing various challenges ranging from a shortage of staff, furniture and almost 80% of the schools have been dilapidated.”

“Two years ago, Ondo State Government renovated and re-constructed schools across the state but  Ilaje  was excluded. Up to this moment, we still have over 60% of the schools that need urgent renovation to save them from total collapse. Also, the state government gave chairs and tables to some schools, yet not up to 40% of what was needed. Early last year, the Government of Ondo State through SUBEB employed 1,000 teachers,   only 46 of which were deployed to Ilaje,”he added.

He therefore appealed to the govt to  as much as possible to harness resources to build more schools or renovate those that need urgent renovation. ” I know with the present economic situation in the country, government  may not be able to employ more workforce, but let them try to pay workers their salary as and when due, to encourage them to do more.

While calling on the parents, Goodluck, who was  awarded best headmaster of the year, in Ilaje LG, noted that Education is for all, and the responsibility of all, therefore parents should also rise, to save the situation, government can’t do it all alone.

The pupils who are the future leaders deserve the best of education.

“For instance, in Zion C&S Primary School, Oke-Ipare, where I am the Headmaster,  parents and some notable individuals in the community and Ilaje at large have been supporting the school; and in this, we can renovate a block of two classrooms through Omosehin Dynasty of Ipare and Mr. Adeyemi Igbekele.”

” Many more through the support of the parents; Scholarship awards to 111 pupils, Provision of textbooks on all core subjects from ECCD to Primary Six, among others, all by some parents and stakeholders.” Goodluck noted.

He also advised parents not to relent in their support, and their cooperation with the teachers, so that the pupils can easily maximize their potential.

” We can not leave it for government alone to avoid total failure in the education sector, which will affect the future of our Children,” he advised.

In his view, a community leader, who doesn’t want his name in print, said the situation in Ilaje, is a different case of which he would rather keep mum from the press.

“I don’t wish to discuss an issue like this with newsmen, but as it is, first of all, I will appreciate the governor for his recent intervention on security issues in this area, more so, I believe will soon be our turn on education.”

A parent, who mentioned her name as Mrs. Owale Roseline, also called  on the government to come to their rescue in Ilaje local government. “Apart from education, we have not been filling the government’s impact like we are not part of the state’s agenda,” she complained.

Meanwhile when our correspondent visited some schools in the local government, it was discovered that  some of the schools visited, buildings were renovated while at some schools, pupils were seen sitting on the floor to be taught, and some classes have no teacher.

Among them are: Zion C$S Primary school, Oke – Ipare, L.A Primary School, Erunna-Ero and Zion C & S Primary School, Abeokun Ipin, all in Ilaje Local government area of Ondo state.

  • Soldiers allegedly torture motor dealer to death, father cries for justice

    by

    The deceased

Father of an Ilesa based automobile dealer, Mr. David Adekunle whose son was allegedly tortured to death by some soldiers at the infantry Battalion Barracks Ibodi, Osun State has cried for justice.

Narrating his ordeal in an emotion laden voice, Mr Adekunle said his 37 years old only son, Yinka Adekunle, was having a swell time with his two friends at a beer parlour when a violent argument ensued between them and two soldiers who were in mufti.

According to him the soldiers purportedly called their colleague who came armed and arrested one of them, while yinka and the other escaped abandoning his vehicle at the spot.

Mr Adekunle who is an estate agent said the deceased later contacted the soldiers on phone and reportedly asked him to come with fifty thousand naira to bail his car at their barracks at Ibodi.

He said he went to the barracks on his son’s invitation to come and bail him out but was allegedly told by the soldiers manning the gate to go and see him at Ayeso police station, from where he was directed to the Wesley guild hospital.

Mr. Adekunle stated that he was shocked to see the lifeless body of his son on a slab in the morgue, calling on the military to investigate the circumstances surrounding the ugly incident and bring those who were involved in the extra-judicial killing to book.

The victim’s cousin, who is also a car dealer said he had initiated a call with a colonel to help secure his car’s release when the deceased informed him that a friend had already volunteered to go with him, stressing that he was surprised to hear the news of his death.

Mr. Adekunle said the captain who is in charge of the barracks should be held responsible for the heinous crime.

They claimed that Yinka’s friend who was allegedly subjected to similar torture is currently on oxygen at the emergency unit of an undisclosed hospital.

Refuting the allegation, the captain of the infantry barracks, Lieutenant Tobi Adedapo, described it as unfounded.

All efforts to speak further with the commanding officer on the incident proved abortive as he said he was not authorized to grant a press interview.

  • Convention: PDP Mocks APC Over Adamu Abdullahi

    Press Statement

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) mocks the All Progressives Congress (APC) over the imposition of Sen. Abdullahi Adamu, a man who was arraigned in Court on 149-count charge of alleged fraudulent award of contracts and stealing of public funds estimated at N15 billion, as its National Chairman.

The PDP describes the APC jamboree in the name of a National Convention as a Convention of lies, celebration of illegality, corruption and arrogance in failure adding that any leadership birthed through such process can only be overtly corrupt, debauch and illegal.

It is clear that with the combination of the corrupt, deceitful and rudderless Buhari-led APC government and the illegitimate Abdullahi Adamu-led party leadership, corruption, economic hardship and rudderlessness in the APC government will worsen in our country in the remaining one year of the APC in government.

The composition of the APC national leadership is a clear confirmation that President Buhari has never been committed to the fight against corruption as well as his willingness to further open our national vaults to ravenous treasury looters in the APC.

The PDP challenges members of the illegitimate APC national leadership, particularly Sen. Adamu to come clean on corruption charges against them.

The new APC Chairman should inform Nigerians why he was not courageous enough to submit himself to trial at the Federal High Court, Lafia, Nasarawa State rather than hide under technicalities. Senator Adamu should therefore come clean to Nigerians on the said case before parading himself as a saint.

It is therefore pathetic to see Sen. Adamu showboating on stage to impress his puppet master by attempting to denigrate other Nigerians and our great Party, the PDP.

Our Party has only pity for Sen. Adamu and does intend to confer him an undue relevance with a response. Sen. Adamu should however be conscious of the fact that time does not run against the State in criminal matters. He should therefore not have any illusion that being an APC Chairman will avail him a perpetual cover.

Moreover, it was appalling to see APC leaders come out one after the other at their national jamboree to spew out lies and false performance claims on the economy, infrastructure and security even in the face of biting economic hardship, high cost of living, excruciating fuel emergency, lingering crisis in the education sector and escalated insecurity that was happening real time and simultaneously when the ridiculous claims of achievement were being made.

Is it not shameful that while APC leaders were lying on stage in Abuja, terrorists were busy attacking the Kaduna International Airport, located in an APC controlled state?

In any case, the PDP restates its cautions that the purported APC National Working Committee (NWC) does not have the legitimacy of office as the process that produced it under the Caretaker/Extraordinary Convention Planning Committee (CECPC) remains unconstitutional and flawed.

The PDP cautions aspirants intending to participate in the 2023 general elections under the APC to note that they are on a journey to nowhere with the APC.
