  • Celebratng Democracy Day 2025: A Message from Tomiwa Aregbesola FNSE, FIMC

    by

As we commemorate Democracy Day in Nigeria, I, Tomiwa Aregbesola, Chairman of the Tomiwa Aregbesola Foundation (TAF), felicitate with us all on 26years of unbroken democracy and extend my heartfelt appreciation to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his unwavering commitment to democracy and democratic values. His personal sacrifices in the fight for and upholding democratic values inspire us all. Today serves as a powerful reminder of our significant journey since the re-establishment of democracy and the sacrifices made by those who fought for the freedoms some now take for granted.

I would also like to seize this opportunity to recognize Governor Lucky Orimisan Ayedatiwa of Ondo State, whose exemplary leadership and dedication to public welfare have greatly contributed to fostering democratic principles in our region and state. In just a little over 100 days, Governor Ayedatiwa has demonstrated remarkable leadership that inspires hope and optimism in the people of Ondo State.

Under his guidance, we have witnessed transformative policies focusing on:

Infrastructural Development: Governor Ayedatiwa’s prioritization of ongoing projects has significantly improved infrastructure across the state. By upgrading roads, bridges, and public facilities, he is enhancing accessibility and fostering economic growth, creating an environment conducive to trade and investment.

Fair Labor Practices: As a champion of fair labour, he was among the first to implement the new minimum wage, significantly improving workers’ livelihoods. His recruitment of new teachers further underscores his commitment to quality education and the future of Ondo State’s youth.

Health and Social Welfare: His administration has launched initiatives aimed at enhancing healthcare, increasing access to medical services, and supporting marginalized communities. Additionally, his decisive actions against land grabbing have protected citizens’ property rights.

Transport for Students: A key achievement has been the revival of the students’ transport system, ensuring safe transport for students and alleviating logistical burdens on families. This initiative reflects his commitment to creating a supportive educational environment.

Local Governance Empowerment: Governor Ayedatiwa has also strengthened local governance through timely elections, ensuring accessible and transparent governance that empowers citizens in decision-making processes.

Economic Initiatives: To stimulate the state’s economy, he is focusing on developing the deep-sea port and engaging with investors, positioning Ondo State as an attractive hub for business opportunities.

As we celebrate this Democracy Day, let us all recognize that the strength of our democracy relies on the active participation of every Nigerian. We must engage, advocate, and work together to overcome challenges such as corruption and insecurity, ensuring that our democratic institutions serve all citizens effectively.

In conclusion, I commend Governor Ayedatiwa for his outstanding achievements while encouraging more efforts for continued progress.

Let us reaffirm our commitment to a free, fair, and inclusive Nigeria.

Happy Democracy Day to all Nigerians!

  • Tinubu approves recruitment of over 30,000 personnel to boost national security

    by

In a bold move to bolster internal security and enhance national service delivery, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the recruitment of 30,150 personnel across four key paramilitary agencies.

This significant development was confirmed in an official communication from the Office of the Secretary of the Civil Defence, Correctional, Fire and Immigration Services Board (CDCFIB) to the Chairman of the Federal Character Commission. The letter, signed by the CDCFIB Secretary, Major General AM Jibril (Rtd), outlines a strategic push by the federal government to reinforce the country’s security and emergency response architecture.

According to the directive, the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) and the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) will each receive 10,000 new personnel, aimed at improving border management and civil protection efforts. Additionally, the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) is set to absorb 5,150 recruits, while the Federal Fire Service (FFS) will benefit from 5,000 new intakes to enhance firefighting and emergency response across the country.

The recruitment drive also includes the addition of 209 personnel to the Secretariat of the CDCFIB, ensuring administrative efficiency as the agencies scale up operations.

To accelerate the process, the CDCFIB has sought and received a waiver to reduce the usual six-week job advertisement period in national newspapers to three weeks. This, according to insiders, is part of a fast-tracked implementation plan to address urgent security and service delivery gaps.

In a further show of readiness, the Budget Office of the Federation has issued a financial clearance, confirming the availability of funds to support the expansive recruitment effort.

  • Ilaje Constituency 2 Witnesses a New Dawn as Hon. Wumi Fayemi-Obayelu Launches Solar Street Light Project to Strengthen Security and Community Development

    by

In a decisive step towards improving public safety and enhancing the quality of life in Ilaje Constituency 2, the Honourable Member of the Ondo State House of Assembly representing the constituency 2, Hon. Wumi Fayemi-Obayelu, has launched a solar-powered street lighting project. This initiative aims to combat the growing concerns over nighttime criminal activities that have plagued the area in recent times.

The installation of the solar street lights began earlier this week at ODE-ETIKAN and is being rolled out in phases across various strategic locations within the constituency, including residential areas, market zones, community junctions, and school surroundings. The solar lights are expected to significantly reduce the darkness that often emboldens criminal elements and endangers the lives and properties of residents after dusk.

Hon. Fayemi-Obayelu, while emphasizing the importance of light in fostering a secure and economically vibrant community said,

“Our people deserve to feel safe in their homes and as they go about their lives at night. For too long, Ilaje Constituency 2 has suffered from poor visibility and insecurity during nighttime. These solar street lights represent a new dawn for our communities, where development, security, and environmental sustainability go hand in hand,” she said.

She added that the use of solar technology aligns with global best practices for climate-friendly development and offers a sustainable solution to the area’s long standing issues with unreliable electricity supply.

In addition to the security benefits, the solar lighting project is also expected to boost local businesses by extending operational hours, improve road safety, and reduce the risk of accidents at night.

Hon. Fayemi-Obayelu reaffirmed her commitment to the development of Ilaje Constituency 2, promising that this initiative is one of many infrastructure and community empowerment programs planned for her tenure.

“This is just the beginning. We are working tirelessly to ensure Ilaje constituency 2 is not left behind in the journey toward progress,” she concluded.

As the installation progresses, the Honourable member has called on residents to take ownership of the lights and protect them from vandalism, ensuring that the benefits are enjoyed for years to come.

  • Ajogbajesu Twins are not biological twins- Segun Wonderful reveals

Segun Wonderful, a founding member of the Ajogbajesu Band alongside the popular duo Jide and Tope Ajogbajesu, has revealed that the two are not biological twins, contrary to public belief.

In an interview with SMEDIA Podcast, Segun, who left the band years ago due to internal disagreements, cited financial mismanagement and poor administration as reasons for his departure. He further disclosed that a majority of the group’s songs were actually composed by Seyi Ajogbajesu.

Recalling his time with the band, Segun narrated the hardship he endured, including struggling to afford three square meals, before he eventually left to join Yinka Ayefele’s Merrymakers Band.

This interview gained relevance following a recent claim by Seyi Ajogbajesu, who stated that he is the true creator of most of the songs performed by the Ajogbajesu Twins, especially after the passing of Tope Ajogbajesu.

According to Seyi, the group originally planned to go by names like Ajogbajesu Band or Ajogbajesu Music Team, but their promoter suggested “Ajogbajesu Twins” for its uniqueness and market appeal. All members agreed to the name, despite the fact that Jide and Tope were not actual twins.

“I am a music writer and composer. I wrote and composed almost all their songs,” Seyi said. “But things fell apart when I began to notice mismanagement within the team. That led to our eventual split.”

Seyi explained that he was compelled to speak out after someone claimed sole ownership of one of their popular songs, Eledami Oro Re L’ode, following Tope’s death. “As the rightful composer, and since I’m still alive, I had to reclaim my credit,” he stated.

He also noted that Jide Ajogbajesu is his cousin.

  • Tribunal verdict validates Aiyedatiwa’s mandate – Okunomo

The judgment delivered by the Ondo State Governorship Election Petition Tribunal has been described as a “clear and resounding validation” of the people’s mandate given to Governor Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa in the 2024 governorship election.

Hon. Barr. Banji Okunomo, a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and spokesperson for Governor Aiyedatiwa during the election, stated this while reacting to the tribunal’s ruling on Wednesday.

He said the verdict was not surprising, given the transparent and credible nature of the electoral process. “The victory was never in doubt. It simply reflects the overwhelming support Governor Aiyedatiwa enjoyed across the state,” he said.

Okunomo criticized the opposition People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and its candidate, Mr. Agboola Ajayi, for filing what he described as a “fruitless” petition. “They sought a mandate that was never theirs. It’s time to stop wasting party resources and the court’s time,” he added.

Quoting Section 134(1) of the Electoral Act 2022, Okunomo noted that a petition can only succeed if the declared winner was unqualified, if the election was marred by corruption or irregularities, or if the winner did not receive the majority of lawful votes. “None of these grounds applied,” he said.

He recalled that Governor Aiyedatiwa achieved an unprecedented clean sweep of all 18 local government areas in the state, including the PDP candidate’s own ward, which he said signified broad-based acceptance.

“The tribunal rightly held that the court is not a Father Christmas. It delivers justice based on facts and the law, not sentiments or wishful thinking,” he added.

Okunomo commended the judiciary for its courage and consistency in upholding the rule of law. “This judgment strengthens our democracy and affirms the will of the electorate,” he said.

He also expressed gratitude to the people of Ondo State. “As one who served as spokesperson to Governor Aiyedatiwa, I extend my heartfelt congratulations to His Excellency and thank our people for their trust and support.”

“Ondo State has spoken. Justice has prevailed. Democracy has triumphed.”
