The Anambra State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of a police officer captured in a viral video allegedly threatening violence and engaging in conduct considered unbecoming of an officer of the Nigeria Police Force.

The Command disclosed this in a press statement issued on Friday, stating that the officer identified in the video as ASP Newton Isokpehi has been arrested and subjected to internal disciplinary procedures.

According to the statement, the officer was promptly identified and taken into custody following a review of the viral video circulating on social media.

The Command further revealed that the officer has undergone a drug test as part of ongoing investigations aimed at establishing the circumstances surrounding the incident and ensuring a transparent process.

The Commissioner of Police in Anambra State, CP Ikioye Orutugu, condemned the conduct displayed in the video, stressing that the Nigeria Police Force remains a disciplined institution that would not tolerate misconduct, abuse of office, incitement or any form of unprofessional behaviour capable of undermining public trust.

The police assured residents that the outcome of the disciplinary process would be made public and that any officer found culpable would face appropriate sanctions in line with police regulations and the law.

The Command also reminded officers and men to remain professional, emotionally balanced and respectful while carrying out their lawful duties, especially in an era where their actions are constantly subjected to public scrutiny.

It appreciated members of the public, civil society organisations and social media users for providing credible information capable of improving accountability and service delivery within the Force.

The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has condemned the conduct of a police officer, ASP Newton Isokpehi, captured in a viral video allegedly threatening members of the public for recording police activities.

The Force described the officer’s remarks as unprofessional, unacceptable and contrary to the ethics and standards of the Nigeria Police Force.

In a statement issued on Thursday by the Force Public Relations Officer, DCP Anthony Okon Placid, the police said the conduct of the officer was inconsistent with ongoing reforms aimed at promoting transparency, accountability and citizen-focused policing.

According to the statement, the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, has consistently maintained that Nigerians have the right to lawfully record police officers while carrying out their duties, provided such recordings do not obstruct operations or compromise safety.

The Force disclosed that the officer involved had been identified and summoned to the Anambra State Police Command Headquarters where disciplinary procedures had commenced against him.

“The Nigeria Police Force does not tolerate threats, intimidation, abuse of office, or any conduct capable of undermining public trust and confidence in law enforcement institutions,” the statement said.

The police further reiterated that recording police activities remains a legitimate tool for public accountability and transparency and should not attract harassment or intimidation from officers.

The Force also assured the public that the outcome of the disciplinary process against the officer would be made public in due course.

The NPF appreciated Nigerians for their continued partnership and constructive engagement in promoting professionalism, accountability and improved policing standards across the country.

A tragic accident occurred on Wednesday morning along Reuben Fasoranti Road, Akure, Ondo State capital, as a truck reportedly lost control and rammed into several vehicles, crushing two brothers riding on a motorcycle to death.

The victims, said to be middle-aged fruit sellers operating near Iyeoma Plaza in Alagbaka, died on the spot.

A commercial driver who was at the scene narrowly escaped death.

The incident happened close to the office of the Vehicle Inspection Office (VIO), where officials were reportedly conducting a stop-and-check operation on vehicle licences, causing heavy traffic congestion along the road.

Eyewitnesses alleged that the gridlock created by the operation contributed to the tragedy.

Speaking with journalists, the commercial driver who escaped the accident said he had parked his vehicle to deliver goods when the incident occurred.

“I came to deliver goods to my boss, but the shop was not yet open, so I parked by the roadside. As I moved to the back of the vehicle to offload the goods, I suddenly heard people shouting.

“When I turned back, I saw the truck crashing into vehicles and motorcycles. I immediately ran for my life. My vehicle was badly damaged, but I thank God I survived,” he said.

The truck reportedly crushed the two brothers instantly.

Police officers from the Ijapo Division later arrived at the scene and evacuated the victims’ bodies to the morgue.

Meanwhile, angry residents and sympathisers blamed the VIO officials for the incident, accusing them of causing the traffic buildup that allegedly led to the crash.

Tension rose in the area as some youths attempted to attack the VIO office before security operatives intervened.

The Nigeria Police Force was said to have restored calm and prevented further breakdown of law and order.

The Ondo State Police Command has announced the assumption of duty of CP Felix Ohagwu as the 47th Commissioner of Police in the state.

Ohagwu officially took over from the outgoing Commissioner of Police, CP Adebowale Lawal, following his deployment by the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, as part of efforts to strengthen internal security and improve policing across the country.

According to a statement issued by the Ondo State Police Command, the new police commissioner is a seasoned officer with over three decades of experience in crime prevention, intelligence-led policing, public safety management and operational coordination.

The Command noted that CP Ohagwu had served in several operational, investigative and administrative positions across the country, where he distinguished himself through professionalism, discipline and dedication to duty.

Speaking after assuming office, the new police commissioner pledged to consolidate on the existing security architecture in Ondo State while ensuring the protection of lives and property.

He assured residents that the command under his leadership would remain committed to combating crime and criminality through proactive policing, intelligence gathering, community engagement and collaboration with other security agencies and stakeholders.

Ohagwu also emphasized that the command would uphold transparency, accountability, respect for human rights and professionalism in the discharge of its duties.

He further stated that officers and men of the command would continue to be guided by integrity, ethical conduct and quality service delivery in line with global best policing practices.

The commissioner expressed appreciation to the Inspector-General of Police for the confidence reposed in him, while also commending his predecessor, CP Adebowale Lawal, for his contributions toward maintaining peace and security in Ondo State.
