  • Election Tribunal: Ondo APC applauds judgment

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ondo hails the judgment of the State Governorship Election Tribunal, describing it as victory for the people of Ondo State, who abandoned everything on October 10, last year, to cast their votes.

The chapter congratulates its Caretaker Committee Chairman, Engr. Ade Adetimehin, its candidate for the election, Arakunrin Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, SAN, his running mate, Hon. Lucky Ayedatiwa, and indeed all the teeming supporters of APC in Ondo State. They have all been vindicated by the sound judgment.

We commends the Tribunal for being dispassionate, and objective in considering all the arguments, and counter- arguments assembled before it, while the trial lasted.

The party further showers appreciation on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), for sticking to what is fair and reasonable.

The party wonders how a candidate that scored 3 over 18 in an examination could expect to be declared successful, adding “the People’s Democratic Party wanted victory through the backdoor”.

It advises the main opposition party to accept the judgment in good faith, and join hands with the ruling party for the purpose of fast tracking economic and infrastructure development of the Sunshine State.

  • We’re sure of victory against Akeredolu at appeal court —PDP

    PRESS STATEMENT.

ONDO TRIBUNAL JUDGEMENT: JEGEDE/PDP SURE OF VICTORY AT THE APPELLATE COURT

The Peoples Democratic Party ( PDP) Ondo State Chapter and its Candidate Eyitayo Jegede, SAN,at the October 20, 2020 Governorship Elections, will appeal the judgement of the Ondo Governorship Elections Tribunal delivered virtually today.

It is important to stress that, in its wisdom, the Tribunal admitted that issues raised by the petitioners were sufficient for consideration but Constitutional, which the Tribunal is not in a position to do justice to.

The interpretation of the Constitution is a role reserved exclusively for the highest Court in the land- the Supreme Court of Nigeria.

The Constitution of every country is the document that regulates actions and behavior of her citizens.

Therefore, it is our belief that nobody can flagrantly trample on the 1999 Constitution (as Amended) and escape with the excuse that the Tribunal has no jurisdiction.

The PDP is convinced that, we have a strong case for which we shall be vindicated at the end of the day.

We wish to appeal to all our party faithfuls to be steadfast and remain calm in the present circumstance, as we are sure of victory in the long run.

  • Tribunal verdict reflects the position of the Law-Akeredolu

    …says no enemies, no grudges

Ondo State Governor, Arakunrin Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, SAN has described the judgement of the State Election Tribunal as true reflection of the position of the Law and the collective wish of the people.

Governor Akeredolu similarly posited that he had no enemies to hold any grudges against as a result of the Tribunal case.

The Governor made this known shortly after the Election Tribunal struck out the case brought before it by Eyitayo Jegede, SAN, the PDP governorship candidate in the October 10, 2020 governorship election.

“For every purpose and mission endorsed by God, the will to navigate the clouds of uncertainties and the path of thorns becomes stronger if backed by faith. In our own case, our faith is unshakable. It is, therefore, with gratitude to God that we accept the verdict of the Honourable Tribunal.

“We have gone through this legal process and the path of Justice with the hope that the true position of the Law shall once again, be examined and expoused. The industry and legal expertise demonstrated by the Honourable Tribunal has corroborated this desire.

“We were equally enamoured by the inexorable quest to renew our social bond with the good people of State while the legal tussle was on. In an unambiguous manner, the Tribunal verdcit has further fermented this bond and strengthened the wish of the people.

“Notwithstanding, the legal process was not just part of our democratic culture. Legal paths, without doubt, provide in some cases, certain opportunities that permeate fresh frontiers.

“Therefore, the ability to extend the hands of friendship, the courage to absord even the undeserving as well as the magnanimity to reinvigorate old, laxed relationships without grudges is what makes a real democrat. I hold no grudges against anyone.

“Once again, the good people of Ondo State, without any stratification, remain my constituents. We shall together, move the State to higher and loftier heights.

“For my brother, friend and colleague, Eyitayo Jegede, my respect for him cannot wane and I enjoin him to join hands with us in this Ondo Project. There is no victor, no vanquished.

  • Ondo lawyers back JUSUN, protest over financial autonomy

Lawyers in Ondo State on Monday protested the continued strike action embarked upon by Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria (JUSUN) over the demand for financial autonomy for judiciary arm of government.

The lawyers from five branches in the state converged on Akure High Court complex from where they moved round the state capital and ended in the governor’s office in Alagbaka where a letter of protest was presented to the government.

Armed with different placards including “Please, save the judiciary from sinking. The time for emancipation is now” “NBA says no Executive control of judiciary” “Aketi Obey section 121(3) of the Constitution” “NBA believes in judicial autonomy” and “Save judiciary from drowning” the lawyers said the governors should allow judicial autonomy in the state.

Led by the Akure branch of the NBA, Mr Rotimi Olorunfemi, Thompson Akinyemi and Chief Orimisan Okorisa of Ondo and Okitipupa branches of NBA, the lawyers said a situation where the judiciary goes to governors for fund each time is not acceptable to lawyers in the state.

In the letter submitted to the governor’s office, the lawyers said the judiciary which is an independent arm of government under the Constitution and saddle with the important role of administration of justice should not be strangulated by the executive arm of government.

The lawyers said without an independent judiciary, the implication on the socio-economic fortune of the people is better imagined.

The letter read “JUSUN’s demand, which the NBA unequivocally supports, it is, therefore, not alien to our system of governance, because federalism comes alive through active implementation of the doctrine of separation of powers.

” It is particularly reprehensible that despite all the interventions of relevant stakeholders towards enforcing constitutional provisions, this state has continued in the undemocratic practice of micromanaging the funds due to the judiciary with gross impunity, and in breach of oath of office which requires that you uphold the dictates of the Constitution.”

The NBA said as a major shareholder in the justice sector with the specific mandate to protect the rule of law, the lawyers are in total support of the judicial workers’ strike action which is aimed at ensuring an independent judicial arm of government
