The new Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa has abolished the 18-year admission benchmark into tertiary institutions in the country.
This is as he hinted on the possibility of his administration to review the nation’s education policy.
However, the minister said there be no reversal on the federal government’s decision to void over 22,700 degree certificates obtained by Nigerians in some “fake” universities in neighbouring Togo and Benin Republic.
Alausa spoke on Tuesday in his inaugural ministerial press conference which is ongoing in Abuja.
The Ogun State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has directed its members who own accounts with Guaranty Trust Holding Company (GTbank) to shut it.down with immediate effect.
According to report, the directives come on the heels of continuous detention of a member of the council, Seun Odunlami in connection with an alleged investigative report involving the bank and it’s Chief Executive Officer, Segun Agbaje.
Recall that Seun Odunlami and 3 others were arrested and have been remanded at the Ikoyi correctional center for more than a month, with efforts to get bail proving difficult.
Speaking with newmen at the council’s secretariat in Iwe iroyin, Abeokuta, the Chairman of the council, Comrade Wale Olarenwaju noted that the offense with which Odunlami and others was accused of is a bail-able offense, and being in detention for over 7weeks is against their fundamental human rights.
Olarenwaju however called on the Federal Government and the National Assembly to further tinker with the Cybercrime Act of 2024 as amended, saying that the law has been used to cowed the media, with frivolous charges in courts.
” I stand before you with a heavy heart, compelled to address a deeply troubling matter involving the abduction and continued detention of an individual who is unjustly held under dubious circumstances.
“The manner in which this abduction was executed is alarming. It appears that the very institutions that are supposed to protect our citizens are being manipulated for personal agendas.
“This case, which we believe is characterized by a clear abuse of power, reveals a concerning trend where individuals are detained not based on lawful grounds, but rather through the influence of certain powerful entities.
“We must recognize that the use of police forces to enforce such actions is not just an infringement of rights, but a grave infraction on the principles of justice and democracy.
“It is important to stress that this individual is facing charges that are bailable, yet they remain trapped in a web of unlawful custody that violates their rights and undermines our justice system”.
“I hereby call on all journalists in Ogun state to close down their various accounts in GTbank. This also includes all chapels under the Ogun state council.
“I also call on other state councils to join us in this struggle to free our members.
“As we bring this issue to light, we urge anyone with information or influence to stand up against this injustice. It is our collective responsibility to ensure that all individuals receive fair treatment under the law, regardless of their circumstances or affiliations”, he said

This is changing now with the renovation of the old Akure stadium and the promised completion of the new stadium near Akure High School.”

A quiet neighborhood in Akure, Ondo State, was plunged into chaos as a 32-year-old woman, Obajuluwa OluwaKemi, narrowly escaped being lynched by an angry mob.
The incident occurred around 5 p.m on November 1st, 2024 happened when she was caught in what neighbors alleged to be a homosexual affair with her partner, sparking widespread outrage.
According to eyewitnesses, the tension had been building for some time, with neighbors growing suspicious of the women’s actions.
These suspicions came to a head when a group of curious and enraged individuals forcibly entered Bunmi Akintayo’s residence, accusing the ladies of engaging in a same-sex relationship.
In Nigeria, same-sex relationships remain heavily stigmatized and illegal under the Same-Sex Marriage (Prohibition) Act of 2014, which criminalizes such relationships with penalties ranging from 10 to 14 years in prison.
The situation quickly escalated as the mob, inflamed by a mix of moral outrage and prejudice, threatened to mete out its own form of justice.
Eyewitnesses described the mob as hostile, with angry chants and threats of physical violence filling the air.
In the ensuing chaos, OluwaKemi managed to break free and flee through the back door of the residence.
She sprinted through the narrow streets, narrowly avoiding the mob, which had gathered in increasing numbers after rumors of the alleged affair spread like wildfire.
Some accounts suggest that a kind neighbor provided her temporary shelter, potentially saving her life, as the mob scoured the area in search of her.
Her partner, however, was not so fortunate. Overpowered by the mob, the second woman was subjected to verbal and physical abuse and paraded through the streets in a humiliating display.
Local vigilantes eventually took custody of the woman, while the mob clamored for her to be handed over to the police.
Shortly after, police officers arrived at the scene and took the woman into custody, both to prevent further harm and to begin legal proceedings. As of now, she is being held for interrogation, while OluwaKemi remains in hiding, fearing for her safety.
The incident has sent shockwaves throughout Akure, igniting debates about the treatment of same-sex individuals in Nigeria. Human rights organizations have condemned the violence, calling for tolerance and protection of all citizens, regardless of sexual orientation.
Many have pointed out that same-sex people in Nigeria are often subjected to extreme levels of violence and discrimination, with little to no accountability due to deeply ingrained cultural and religious beliefs.
Under Nigeria’s anti-gay laws, both OluwaKemi and her partner face potential imprisonment if convicted, further compounding the fear and uncertainty surrounding their futures.
This disturbing incident underscores the harsh realities faced by same-sex individuals in Nigeria, where even the most private expressions of love can lead to violence and persecution. As OluwaKemi remains in hiding, her story has become a stark reminder of the dangers that same-sex people face daily in a society that continues to criminalize and ostracize them.
The Gubernatorial candidate of the PDP in the forthcoming Nov 16 election , H E Agboola Alfred Ajayi has revealed that the OSOPADEC office presently located in Akure the state capital would be relocated back to Igbokoda, one of the mandate areas if he becomes the Governor of Ondo State by next year.
The Gubernatorial candidate made this statement at the campaign rally in igbokoda yesterday where the mammoth crowd of party faithfuls and supporters turned out in large numbers.
While justifying his statement of relocating the commission back to Igbokoda, the Gubernatorial candidate said one of the mandates of the commission is to operate from his mandate area , to be close to the people it’s managing their resources so that the people would have unhindered access to the commission whenever they have some pressing issues .
” Locating the commission in Akure is an aberration , u can’t have a commission meant for Ilaje and Ese Odo people in Akure while the people the commission is to administer is in igbokoda and igbekebo , there will not be proper monitoring of things that affect the people immediately , this must be corrected for easy as access and administration by the commission, I will bring the commission headquarters back to Igbokoda when I become Governor of Ondo State ” he said.
Also speaking on the Ayetoro Community sea encroachment , the PDP Gubernatorial Candidate said it is a sad development that a town which was once referred to as happy city is gradually going into extinction and Governor from same Ilaje LG seems to have run short of ideas on how to stop the sea incursion that is gradually taking over the community .
” As for me and as somebody prepared for the job , I am ready to drive the sea away from its present position for about 3 kilometers to the town , do some reclamation and have a new Ayetoro Community under my watch as Governor, I believe and strongly too that this we can achieve within a short time we assume office at Alagbaka, I have done my homework very well on this matter” Ajayi said .
While lamenting the poverty and the not too interesting conditions our people in Ilaje and Ese Odo are passing through at the moment , the Gubernatorial candidate said there is no justification for that as the avalanche of funds available to government and the God given resources in our areas , there is no justification for our people to be poor.
Agboola Ajayi said all God given resources and funds available to government would be judiciously used for the good of the people in Ondo State as explained in his 7 points agenda for transforming anew our social economy sectors in Ondo State .
