  • Ondo Moves To Combact Menance Of Plastic Waste, Flooding

    by

    • As Gov Aiyedatiwa promises timely support for flood victims

The Governor of Ondo State, Hon. Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa, has said that tackling the menace of plastic waste and flooding is a top priority for his administration as environmental degradation continues to threaten the ecosystem and human health.

Speaking at the 2024 OSEPA Summit tagged “Combating the menace of plastic pollution in Ondo State 3.0” held on Thursday, at the International Centre for Culture and Events (The Dome), Akure, Governor Aiyedatiwa reiterated his administration’s commitment to achieving a plastic-free environment in Ondo State.

The Governor commended the Ondo State Environmental Protection Agency (OSEPA) for its efforts and expressed satisfaction with the consistency of the annual summit since the agency’s creation in 2022.

“Plastic pollution remains a hydra-headed problem with devastating effects on our environment and the healthy existence of humanity,” the Governor noted, emphasizing the need for collaborative action to combat the issue.

The Governor highlighted the ongoing environmental challenges, including improper waste disposal and clogged waterways caused by plastics.

The Governor recalled recent flash floods in Ondo Town, expressing sympathy for affected residents and pledging that the state government would take necessary steps to assist victims and prevent future occurrences.

“Our administration has already taken bold steps to protect the environment. We’ve deployed amphibious excavators in each senatorial district to dredge waterways and canals, ensuring free water flow and safeguarding lives and property”, he said.

Governor Aiyedatiwa urged participants at the summit to generate innovative ideas on reducing plastic waste and align their recommendations with global standards, such as the United Nations’ educational campaigns for plastic pollution awareness.

“Let me use this unique opportunity to reiterate our avowed commitment to zero waste philosophy in our dear Sunshine State. In spite of the enormous responsibilities of OSEPA, I wish to charge you to continue to display your professional skills in ensuring the achievement of this target committed to you.

“I wish to reiterate the resolve of our administration to adopt the Extended Producer Responsibility (ER) which is a scheme to make manufacturers of some items be responsible for creating measures to take back and recycle the products they produce. I am glad that OSEPA is looking into this critical step.

“We will continue to support OSEPA’s efforts within the framework of environmental regulations and won’t allow reckless degradation of our environment”, the Governor added.

Governor Aiyedatiwa also addressed the need to streamline scavenging operations within the state, recognizing their value but pointing out health and safety concerns.

“Ondo State must set the standard for environmental management in Nigeria. Our recent ‘Light Up’ project, which has illuminated major roads, is already curbing nighttime waste dumping,” the Governor said.

The Minister of State for Environment, Dr. Razak Salako, in his remarks, stated that the federal government is working closely with the Ondo State government to address various environmental challenges.

He commended Governor Aiyedatiwa’s commitment to maintaining a cleaner environment, noting that the federal government is pleased with the progress made under his leadership.

Earlier, in his welcome address, the Special Adviser on Environment, Hon. Adeyemi Olayemi, acknowledged the governor’s unwavering support for OSEPA’s initiatives and praised the participation of environmental professionals at the summit.

Olayemi also expressed confidence that the summit’s outcomes would lead to practical solutions to plastic pollution and environmental degradation in Ondo State.

  • FG, labour agree on ways to crash food prices, transport fares

The Federal Government and Organised Labour on Wednesday, agreed on modalities to crash transport fares and prices of essential commodities, especially foodstuffs.

This came on a day the House of Representatives asked the Federal Government to reverse the recent petrol price hike and take immediate steps to stabilise petrol and cooking gas prices through targeted interventions, such as temporary price relief measures, tax reductions, or subsidies on LPG for low-income households.

Rising from the meeting held in the Office of the Secretary to Government of the Federation, SGF Sen George Akume last night, the government also agreed to summon a meeting with state governors to ensure the N70,000 new minimum wage fully commenced nationwide in October.

Sources at the meeting said that, among others, government and Labour also agreed to continue engagement and discussions to thaw frosty relationship that had existed before now.

“Government promised to release over 2,000 Compressed Natural Gas, CNG, conversion kits in the first instance. It also promised to release 45 CNG buses to Labour to complete the 90 earlier promised organised labour.

“As part of efforts at crashing transport fares across the country, the Federal Government will hold a meeting with state governors to fully embrace the CNG buses. This will also affect the cost of foodstuffs as it will reduce the costs of transporting food items from different locations to consumers drastically. These are parts of efforts to cushion the effects of the subsidy removal on the citizens.

“The government also promised to summon a meeting of the economic council to impress it upon state governors to ensure the new minimum wage takes off across the country this month.

“It also promised to incorporate labour into the economic council, so labour will participate and monitor economic policies of government, instead of government throwing policies at labour and Nigerians that may result in agitation or protest.

“They agreed that it is better to ‘jaw-jaw than war-war’, meaning, there will be continuous dialogue between government and labour.

“The government also promised to hasten and complete the refineries. They said almost five refineries are about to be completed,’’ a source told newsmen last night.

The sources equally said “government promised to pay all outstanding arrears and wage awards to workers and inaugurate all the boards labour has representatives.”

One of the sources said “all these are promises, but the good thing is that it was agreed that the meeting will be a continuous process.”

Another source also said the issue of government not honouring agreement was raised, adding that government admitted that it did not do well in that regard and promised to change.

Asked if labour was satisfied with the meeting, the source said: “It is not about satisfaction but a way forward from the past where government was not discussing with organised labour.

‘’If this trend or practice continues, there is every possibility that disagreements between government and labour will reduce.”

The joint National Executive Council (NEC), meeting between the two Labour centres, NLC and TUC, he said, was to brief members about the outcome of the meeting with government.

It would be recalled that among government’s representatives at the meeting were Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, the National Security Adviser (NSA), Nkeiruka Onyejeocha, Labour Minister; and Wale Edun, Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy.

Others include Alhaji Mohammed Idris, Information Minister; Heineken Lokpobiri, Petroleum Resources Minister, Ekperikpe Ekpo, Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Gas), and representatives of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation Limited, NNPCL.

Also present at the joint meeting were the President of NLC, Mr Joe Ajaero; Deputy President, Kabiru Ado Sani; the General Secretary, Mr Emma Ugboaja; Deputy President of the TUC, Dr. Tommy Etim Okon; the Secretary General, Nuhu Toro; and the President of the Nigeria Union of Teachers, NUT, who is also a deputy president of NLC.

The Chief Executive Officer of OJ Movement of Liberation in Ondo East Local Government, Hon. John Ogunmoyero, has commended Governor Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa for approving a ₦73,000 minimum wage for Ondo State workers.

The Governor, made the announcement on saturday during the Ondo central senatorial district of the APC gubernatorial campaign flag off at the Ondo Township Stadium.

He also stressed his administration’s commitment to timely salary payments and regular promotions.

Hon. Ogunmoyero, a prominent grassroots leader and philanthropist in Ondo East Local Government, praising the move as a step towards improving civil servants welfare and addressing financial challenges.

According to him, “Governor Aiyedatiwa’s approval of the N73,000 minimum wage for Ondo State workers marks a significant milestone in his administration’s commitment to social welfare.

It comes at a time when economic challenges are affecting many parts of Nigeria, making his decision all the more meaningful. This wage increase not only improves the financial security of thousands of workers and their families but also boosts the morale of the public workforce, which is essential for the effective functioning of the state’s institutions.

“Aiyedatiwa’s policies are driven by a genuine concern for the welfare of the people and as a leader who prioritizes the people’s needs over political gains.

Moreover, this wage increase is not an isolated instance of Governor Aiyedatiwa’s people-first leadership. His administration has continuously focused on critical sectors such as healthcare, education, infrastructure, and agriculture. The N73,000 minimum wage is another reflection of his administration’s inclusive approach, ensuring that public servants who play a crucial role in governance are adequately compensated for their contributions.

The ripple effect of this wage increase goes beyond immediate financial relief for workers. It is also expected to stimulate economic activity in the state. With more disposable income, workers will likely spend more within local markets, thereby supporting small businesses and boosting the state’s economy.

He is a leader who understands that good governance is about responding to the everyday needs of the people. His administration’s initiatives have been widely regarded as pragmatic and geared toward improving the quality of life for all Ondo State citizens, especially those in underserved communities. This connection to the people has earned him high approval ratings, as noted by stakeholders across the state.

As his administration continues to roll out policies that have a direct impact on the lives of the people, the Governor is solidifying his legacy as a leader who is not only visionary but also compassionate. His actions speak to a broader vision of governance that is rooted in social equity and economic justice, ensuring that the people of Ondo State feel the benefits of their government’s work.

In essence, Aiyedatiwa’s leadership showcases a model of governance where the prosperity of the people is placed at the forefront. His approval of the N73,000 minimum wage is just one of the many ways he continues to demonstrate that his love for the people is more than rhetoric; it is a driving force behind his administration’s policies and actions.

The future looks promising for Ondo State under his leadership, with many more policies likely to continue improving the lives of the citizens and setting a high standard for governance across Nigeria.

  • NPFL25: Ologunloluwa Ascribes Sunshine Stars’ Victory over Rangers to Aiyedatiwa’s Lucky Aura

    by

Surmounting the challenge posed by a champion all over the world is always a Herculean task.

That exactly was what Sunshine Stars of Akure did with panache over defending Nigeria Premier Football League champions Rangers International of Enugu.

In a game Sunshine Stars had the better chances, Stephen Chukwude scored the only goal in the 43rd minute at Otunba Dipo Dina International Stadium, Ijebu-Ode.

The tie also marked a return to country home of former Ijebu United midfielder Kazeem Ogunleye who has a couple goals for the Antelopes.

President of Sunshine Stars Football Club Dele Ologunloluwa asserts that good luck following Ondo State governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa cannot be ruled out of the outcome of the game.

“I hurriedly came in from Ondo, venue of the flag off of Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa’s campaign for the November 16 election and where the state helmsman hinted on a handful of things to be accomplished with sports also in the front burner.

“That stimulated the entire team to victory against defending NPFL champions Rangers International.

“Besides, the ‘luck’ and ‘success’ as encapsulated by the Governor’s names were a major factor in today’s win!

“It is a great day for us in Ondo State to round off an eventful day with this victory.”

Ologunloluwa also gave thumbs up to the team officials and players for braving the odd.

He promised to encourage the team, the more to sustain such outstanding performance.

  • Chukwude’s Strike Earns Sunshine Stars Maximum Points Against Rangers

    by

Stephen Chukwude’s 42nd minute goal was all Sunshine Stars Football Club of Akure needed to defeat Rangers International of Enugu in a match-day six tie of Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL), played at Otunba Dipo Dina Stadium, Ijebu- Ode.

The home side dominated the encounter from blast of the whistle to end of the game.

Chukwude, a former Rangers International and Heartland FC player, wasted no time in tucking the ball into the top roof of the net from Chinedu Nwosu’s pass in the 43rd minute.

The Akure-based side could have been up by four goals in the first half but went into the break with a lone goal due to inability to convert clear cut chances.

The restart of the game saw the reigning NPFL champions display some aggressiveness which was well curtailed by the home side’s backline.

Sunshine Stars’ Nelson Osahon, Adebayo Abayomi were thrown into the fray to replace, Adewale Yusuf and Chinedu Nwosu respectively, for more goals which never came.

Osahon marked his presence with a thunderous shot from outside the box, only for Rangers’ goalkeeper, Lucky Abdullahi to deny him.

Introduction of Suraj Ibrahim, Ajagbe Abdulazeez and Elmer Arunta in place of hardworking Dozie Umea , Stephen Chukwude and Seth Mayi was unable to change the outcome of the game.

In his post match interview, Sunshine Stars’ Technical Adviser, Kennedy Boboye, who commended his players for grabbing the all important three points, promised to work on the teams’ conversion of chances

“It was a good game, the most important thing is the three points we have because its one game after the other.

“All we need is just to go back and start working on goal scoring; had we won the game by four to five goals it would have been well deserved.

“There is no game we played that we didn’t miss goals since the league program started.”

Sunshine Stars are currently fourth on the log and next visit Ilorin to face Kwara United in a midweek tie.
