  • Amotekun will be armed, backed by law – Akeredolu

    by

Ondo State Governor, Arakunrin Oluwarotimi Akeredolu,SAN, has said the Amotekun Corps must be allowed to bear the tools and the most sophisticated weapons available to fight back against marauders committing crimes against humanity.

Governor Akeredolu explained that the incontestable authority of the state must be imposed in the country which is under threat by brazen conflict entrepreneurs and armed, audacious non-state actors.

He asserted that the State Security outfits backed by law whether in the Western Nigeria, Katsina, Borno, Benue or any Northern State must have access to the same sophisticated weapons that the marauders have.

The Governor vowed that his administration will continue to support the operational capacity of all security agencies in the State both in terms of equipment and the welfare of their personnel.

He spoke at the Passing-Out Parade of Courses 3 and 4 of the State Amotekun Corps at the Gani Fawehinmi Freedom Arcade, Igbatoro Road, Akure on Monday.

Governor emphasised that the passing out ceremony is a reminder of the need to strategize and tackle the current security situation, which he said has been left to snowball into existential crises across Nigeria.

He averred that the commitment of his administration to the safety and welfare of the people of the State and investors remains unshaken.

Governor Akeredolu charged the new officers to do nothing that will soil the image of Amotekun Corps, adding that much is expected from them.

“The key guiding principles which you must adhere to at all times include spartan discipline, zero-tolerance to bribery and abuse of power, prompt response to distress calls and display of professionalism in the discharge of your duties. No form of misconduct shall be tolerated.” He stressed.

The Governor, who noted that the current internal security framework in the country is ineffectual, submitted that the response of the subnationals by setting up their own outfits is welcome, necessary, and has become indispensable.

Governor Akeredolu said:”The Western Nigeria Security Network, AMOTEKUN CORPS, as a response, is now not just the first line of defence, but the ultimate bulwark in the protection of a way of life and of a civilization.

“The efforts of our determined and valiant Amotekun personnel since inception must be underscored, encouraged and highly commended. We must all rise at this time to acknowledge their efforts.

“On our parts, we will continue to support the operational capacity of all security agencies in the State both in terms of equipment and the welfare of their personnel.

“The recent donation of 50-fitted patrol vehicles is a testament to our resolve to be up-to-date in fighting crime and criminality because without a secured environment, there can never ne visible and sustained development.

“The Amotekun Corps must be given the tools to carry out its now pivotal, indispensable duties. For centuries, we have been admonished that “a bad workman blames his tools,” in the case of Amotekun Corps the workman is expected to function without good tools.

“It is not only absurd, but also a dereliction of duty and a cause of disaffection. Dissatisfaction is induced by a feeling of unfairness. The crises in the conventional wisdom is life-threatening and nationwide. Therefore, it is unacceptable if the state sanctions differing rules of engagement for different sub-national governments.

“Without providing the sub-national security forces to be a counter-balancing force we have a crisis which strikes at the heart of the conception and the definition of the state itself. It is not just the definition of the State, the State itself is under existential threat.

“The modern state is defined by Treaties. The conception of the modern state beatified by these treaties gives it “an incontestable monopoly of the means of violence, intimidation and coercion.”

“Those passing out today have undergone rigorous training at great expense to the state. The training will not end here it will be continuous. However, no amount of training will mask the debilitation of fighting with one arm tied against implacable foes.

“Amotekun must therefore be armed and will be armed and be backed by law. Otherwise, the training will be inadequate and we will be placing the lives of these great patriots in danger.

    The colourful Passing Out Parade was attended by the Deputy Governor, Hon. Lucky Aiyedatiwa; members of Ondo State House of Assembly led by the Speaker, Bamidele Oleyelogun; the Chief Judge of the state represented by the High Court Registrar, Bolatito Ajibade; Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, APC, in the state, Ade Adetimehin; Commander, Amotekun Corps, Akogun Adetunji Adeleye; members of the State Executive Council led by Princess Oladunni Odu; traditional rulers; Heads of security agencies; local government chairmen; religious leaders;

In their separate goodwill messages, the Osemawe of Ondo, Oba Victor Kiladejo and the chairman of Idanre local government, Prince Kayode Aroloye, saluted the courage of Governor Akeredolu which has ensured improved security of lives and property of the citizens through the establishment of Amotekun Corps.

  • Court Order: Lecturers Will Leave Nigeria, ASUU President Warns

The president of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, Professor Emmanuel Osodeke, has warned that the judgement of the National Industrial Court ordering lecturers back to class will have far-reaching effects.

Speaking during an interview on Channels TV on Wednesday, the don said the outcome of the verdict would be catastrophic.

He said, “Let me tell you the catastrophe of what has just happened. The last time this happened was during the military era. I can assure you when this strike is over, a large number of our lecturers are going to migrate from this country. When you are using force to push your lecturers to class.

“First of all, they said, ‘If we owe them, if we don’t pay them, they will come and beg us.’ For seven months, it didn’t work. Our members are still alive. And then, they went to court, you want to force them.

It is a catastrophe. No country who is thinking about the future of their children, thinking about the health of the educational system, who believes in education, (leader) who believes in the future of this country, whose children are in those universities would try that.”

  • Court Remands Chinese National For Allegedly Killing A Lover In Kano

    by

A Magistrates Court in Kano State, presided over by Hanif Sanusi Chiroma, has ordered the remand of Geng Quarong, a Chinese national, for the alleged murder of one Ummukulsum Buhari in Kano.

Quarong was alleged to have stabbed Ummulkhuksum Buhari to death, contrary to Section 221 (B) of the Penal Code Law, punishable with death, under the same law.

He pleaded not guilty upon his arraignment.

The prosecuting counsel, Barrister Khalifa Hashim, prayed the court to remand the defendant to a Correctional Facility, pending when the legal advice will be ready, from the Office of the Attorney General of Kano State.

Consequently, Magistrate Ciroma ordered as prayed.

  • Court order ASUU to call off strike

The National Industrial Court (NIC) has ordered the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) back to work.

The Federal Government in a suit, prayed for the order for ASUU to call off its seven months strike.

Minister of Labour and Employment, on behalf of the Federal Government, had filed the matter before the court by way of referral to resolve the issue of the ongoing strike by ASUU.

Mr J.U.K Igwe, SAN, counsel to FG in his submission had informed the court that the application for the injunction was dated September 12 and filed same date.

He added that the application was brought in pursuant to the rules of the NICN 2017 proceeding.

Igwe further stated that it was predicated on 11 ground, supported by 21 paragraph affidavit deposed to Mr Okechukwu Wampa, a Legal Adviser in the Ministry of Labour and Employment, attached with three exhibits and an undertaking as to damages deposed to by Wampa.

He also urged the court to grant the prayer sought and proceeded to adopt in its entirety and totality the written address, adding that the claimants had met all the requirements to enable the court grant the injunction

He cited that claimant’s action was not apprehensive and regarding damages, he said the lost time of seven months of the strike could not be regained.

He concluded  by saying that going by the provision of section 18 (1) (e) of the Trade Disputes Act 2004, that a worker should not embark on strike when a matter is already before the court,  urged  the court to grant the injunction.

Mr Femi Falana SAN, counsel to the defendant stated that he had  before the court a nine paragraph counter-affidavit filed on September 16 deposed to by the president of ASUU

He further submitted that attached to the affidavit was eight exhibits accompanied by a written address and proceeded to adopt same as their argument in opposition to the interlocutory injunction.

Falana, in addition, argued that the minister lacked the power to order the court in the referral to direct ASUU to call off its strike.

He averred further that once a referral was before a court, no party could go outside of it.

Falana, in his argument, also pointed out that the claimants did not follow due process in part 1 of TDA 2004 that stipulated that only an individual has the right to approach the court as a trade union will first need to go to Industrial Abitration Panel ( IAP), before coming to the court.

He said union can only approach the NICN to appeal the decision of IAP

Falana stressed that the letter that accompanied the referral had the name of the Attorney-General as a party in the suit, but that however, the application filed before the court was without the name.

He added that the referral asking for accelerated hearing was not necessary as there was not urgency in the matter as the strike had lasted for seven months

He also submitted that the balance of convenience was not on the side of the claimants and that the conducts of the claimants in the prayer for the court to interpret the 2009 Agreement should be discountenanced.

He finally urged the court to dismiss the application or direct parties to the IAP.

  • DICEY POLITICS BEFORE IROKO OF ONDO STATE AHEAD OF 2023……Dr. Akeredolu O.N

Will Dr Olusegun Mimiko support Asiwaju Ahmed Bola Tinubu through H.E Nyesom Wike’s faction or align himself with Atiku Abubakar’s aspiration?

    INTRODUCTION

I have said it times without number that the upcoming elections in Ondo state visa-vis entire Nigeria are more about the individuals contesting than their various political parties. There is no difference between all political parties in Nigeria in terms of ideologies. From my little research, I realized that the constitutions of the three-mother political parties of this dispensation i.e from 1999 till now, the Alliance for Democracy (AD), the All People’s Party (APP) and the People’s Democracy Party (PDP) were drafted by late Chief Bola Ige who transversed them all at one point or the other before he finally settled and pursued his presidential ambition in AD and lost to Chief Olu Falae in the primary election.

Moreover, the three leading presidential candidates for 2023, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu of APC, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar of PDP and Mr Peter Obi of Labour Party are not new to the terrain. They have their records in the public domain for scrutiny. For example, Mr Peter Obi was a governor in Anambra state for eight years, likewise, the Jagaban of Borgu (Tinubu) governed Lagos State for two terms. In the same vein, the Turaki of Adamawa (Atiku) was elected as governor of Adamawa state before Chief Olusegun Obasanjo made him his vice and he (Atiku) was in charge of the country’s economy for eight years.

In a nutshell, the performances of these individuals while in office will determine the Nigerians’ preference for them. In all truthfulness, Mr Peter Obi is definitely not in the race. It’s only the political neophyte who can believe that someone whose party has no structures like councillors, chairmen of local governments, house of assembly members, senators, ministers and others, will just wake up in a day and dislodge more entrenching parties like APC and PDP, that can only happen in the imaginations of Mr Obi’s followers. The race is politically between PDP and APC’s presidential candidates.

From the permutations on ground, many PDP members may end up working for Asiwaju Ahmed Tinubu of APC because of how post-election crises were handled by the leadership of the leading opposition party in Nigeria i.e PDP.

    IROKO AND DICEY POLITICS AHEAD

No doubt, Dr Olusegun Mimiko is a great politician and excellent former public office holder. He has been in this game of ballot boxes for more than four decades from his university days at Great Ife where he belonged to the youths wing of the Unity Party of Nigeria i.e Chief Obafemi Awolowo’s party. When Gen Ibrahim Babangida started his little-to-right and little-to-left political ideology of the two-party system, Dr Mimiko was on the leftists’ side i.e SDP. He attempted to govern his local government, Ondo local government (now Ondo East and West) but lost in the primary. He was later compensated with his appointment as the Commissioner for Health under Evang. Bamidele Olumilua, who was the Executive Governor of the old Ondo State between 1991 to 1993.

He contested for Senate during Gen. Sanni Abacha’s five-party system and lost to the popular Mr Kayode Faloye of Akure but the transition program was truncated by the death of the dreaded dictator (Abacha). Since the inception of this political dispensation, he served as Commissioner for Health to Chief Adefarati’s administration. During the reign of Dr Olusegun Agagu, he first served as Secretary to the state government of Ondo state and got a promotion to replace Chief Mrs Mobolaji Oshomo in Chief Olusegun Obasanjo’s administration as the Minister of Housing. Iroko of Ondo state politics became the governor between 2009 and 2017 through the appeal court’s judgement. He lost his quest to represent the good people of Ondo central in the red chamber during the 2019 National Assembly elections.

In terms of party politics, this medical doctor turned politician has tasted more political parties than any politician in Ondo State. He is currently the godfather of PDP in the state, and his associates won the three senatorial tickets in the last PDP primaries across the sunshine state, defeating two incumbent senators. Sen. Nicholas Tofowomo of Ondo south lost to H.E Agboola Ajayi and Sen. Ayo Akinyelure (All-over) lost to Mr Ifedayo Adedipe SAN. Even Mr Tokunbo Modupe who is the standard bearer for PDP in Ondo North senatorial district belongs to Dr Mimiko’s camp. In summary, this former governor is in charge of the party machinery in the state, though, he recently decamped to PDP from ZLP before the primaries.

His (Dr Mimiko’s) group is loyal to Chief Nyesom Wike’s faction. These disgruntled individuals have been at loggerheads with the leadership of PDP, demanding its national party chairman, Sen. Iyorchia Ayu to abdicate his position based on the earlier agreement. Chief Wike’s faction has governors like Eng. Makinde of Oyo state, Chief Ikpeazu of Abia state, Mr Ortom of Benue state and Chief Nyesom Wike of Rivers State. In addition, other leaders like Chief Bode George, Mr Ayodele Fayose, and innumerable political juggernauts also belong to this camp.

    IN CONCLUSION

From the several failed reconciliatory meetings, it’s obvious that Chief Wike’s faction may play the spoiler game for the presidential candidate of PDP, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar in favour of Asiwaju Ahmed Bola Tinubu of APC. The faction has been holding negotiations with the Jagaban of Borgu to have a concrete agreement with working modalities. The question now is, will Dr Olusegun Mimiko support Asiwaju Ahmed Tinubu through H.E Nyesom Wike’s faction or align himself with Atiku Abubakar’s aspiration as a party man? It’s on record that Asiwaju Ahmed Bola Tinubu assisted Dr Olusegun Mimiko during the darkest period of his political career, and he became the governor through the help of God and the assistance of the current presidential candidate of APC. Will Iroko of Ondo state politics pay back the good gesture to the former Lagos State governor?
