… Ex-commissioner, Others Fingered In Blackmail Targeted At First Lady.
Ahead of the coming primary election to pick the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) for the February 26 House of Representatives election into the vacant seat of Akure South/Akure North federal constituency, one of the aspirants has been accused of dropping the name of the wife of the governor to hoodwink potential delegates.
This came after Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu has declared that he will not support any of the aspirants and will rather allow a level playing ground for a popular candidate to emerge.
The aspirant, Mrs. Omowunmi Ohwovoriole, is said to have employed the service of a former Commissioner for Works, Mr. Saka Yusuf Ogunleye, to lobby party leaders using the name of the First Lady with a claim that Mrs. Akeredolu has given the directive to work for Ohwovoriole.
Sources in the party said the chairman of the party in Ondo State, Engr. Ade Adetimehin, has been coerced into the plot to put the female aspirant into undue advantage over other seven aspirants in the party through name dropping.
The party chairman was said to have taken the side of Ohwovoriole in the coming primary and is said to be lobbying potential delegates for her with the name of the first lady.
As a result of the past clashes between Omowumi and the first lady, the group is said to have been going round to drop the name of the wife of the governor as the one backing Omowumi for the party ticket.
Mrs. Ohwovoriole, who is currently the Chairman of the Governing Council of the Federal Polytechnic, Kaura Namoda, Zamfara State, served in the first cabinet of Akeredolu as Commissioner for Women Affairs before she resigned from the position to unsuccessfully run for the House of Reps election in 2019.
At a meeting with the coordinators of her campaign, Mrs. Ohwovoriole was quoted to have said she has reconciled with the first lady and that she has her endorsement and full support to win the party’s ticket.
While Mrs. Ohwovoriole is from Akure South local government, she had started her politics in Lagos by being a two-time member of the Lagos State House of Assembly and only returned to Ondo State in 2016 ahead of the governorship election.
She is said to be having a tough time in dislodging two other popular aspirants for the ticket and had allegedly used the former commissioner, Ogunleye and chairman of Akure south local government, Mr. Gbenga Olaniyi, to pressurize some other aspirants to step down for her, promising that she would get compensation for them.
Governor Akeredolu had refused to endorse any of the ten aspirants for the party ticket and when he held a meeting with them recently, he said the election is a must win for the party and that he will only back the most popular and widely acceptable candidate.
It is on this note that the Akure Concerned People’s Forum under the leadership of Engr. Akinwande Desmond want the National Working Committee of the ruling party to prevail on the State Working Committee under the leadership of Engr. Ade Adetimehin to allow a level playing ground among the entire aspirants in order to avoid the repeat of what happened in 2019.
