  • GOV AKEREDOLU: I WON’T LEAVE UNPAID SALARIES FOR MY SUCCESSOR

    by

    Ondo State Governor, Arakunrin Oluwarotimi Akeredolu,SAN, has assured that he will not leave unpaid salaries for his successor after his eight years in office.

    Governor Akeredolu said he had vowed not to owe workers’ salary since the inception of his administration, adding that the Covid-19 pandemic affected the finance of the state badly and hindered regular payment of salaries.

    The Governor gave the assurance at the Ondo State Health Summit, held at the International Culture and Event Centre (DOME) in Akure on Monday.

    He noted that although his predecessor left unpaid seven months salaries, the Governor promised that all salary arrears presently owed workers in the state will be paid.

    “I am glad to inform you that we made giant strides in all of these areas. Unfortunately, COVID-19 Pandemic came in the third year into our First Term with its attendant economic crisis which has since put governments across the world in financial strait jackets.

    “Notwithstanding the precarious situation we inherited in 2017, you will recall that we had settled six of the seven months arrears of salaries.

    “We employed and have continued to employ qualified personnel for our primary, secondary and tertiary health care facilities. We equally brought in several containers of hospital equipment worth billions of naira from the United States.

    “Again, we established Teaching Hospital Complexes in both Akure and Ondo city as well as established the Contributory Health Insurance Commission among other achievements that are well known to most of our health sector practitioners in the State.” The Governor said.

    He said his administration is determined to sustain and continually improve on efforts at delivering effective and qualitative health care and social welfare services to the people.

    The Governor stated that efforts are in top gear to continually employ qualified personnels for primary, secondary and tertiary health care facilities, stressing that shipments of several containers of hospital equipment worth billions of naira had been brought in to the state from the United States.

    He added:”It is trite knowledge that no government anywhere in the world can claim to have done or achieved it all, especially within the context of a changing world and within the perspective of the theme of this summit. It is for this and many other reasons that the decision to focus on the challenges facing our health care delivery system as a government is well thought out”

    Governor Akeredolu also acknowledged that the need to quickly reposition the health sector with utmost commitment and collaboration is a task that must be done by all stakeholders, reassuring all medical and health workers that health care remains a central focus of his administration’s REDEEMED Agenda.

    “We will, therefore, spare no effort in promptly attending to your welfare. The current issues relating to salary payment are receiving our attention even at the national level. We are working hard to ensure that our State is better funded and supported without delay in order to deliver on our constitutional responsibility to our people.” He said.

    The Governor however, commended the health workers for their level of perseverance in the face of hardship and also appealed to them that their welfare remains a top priority.

    Arakunrin Akeredolu further stressed that his administration will not vacillate in its determination to ensure that the people and residents of the State are duly vaccinated against the deadly virus.

    “To this end, we shall continue to enforce the deadline already issued for everybody in this State to be vaccinated or forfeit the privileges from government such as entrance to public places and access to certain services, among others” he noted

    Earlier in her Welcome Address, The Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Health, Mrs Folukemi Aladenola said the health summit is intended to tap into the experience of experts in the medical profession, policy makers, technocrats and critical stakeholders in the health sector towards updating the health policy in the state.

    “And also leveraging on the summit to discuss developing the needed synergy among the different components of the health sector” she added

    Also Speaking, Director General Kano State Drugs and Hospitals Consumables Management Agency, Alhaji Hisham Imam and his counterpart from Niger State, Dr Mohammed Audi commended Governor Akeredolu for his various health interventions just like his counterparts in Kano State and Niger State.

  • Sotitobire saga: Appeal Court Reserves Judgment

    by

    The court of appeal sitting in Akure, the Ondo state capital will tomorrow, Friday, deliver Judgement on the life imprisonment verdict against Prophet Alfa Babatunde by the state High court following the missing of a boy in his church.

    The court of appeal had in September reserved judgment on the case which was filed by prophet Alfa Babatunde, the Founder of Sotitobire Praising Chapel Akure, against his conviction.

    One of the counsels told our reporter  that the court had reached out to them that the judgment will be delivered on Friday.

    Prophet Alfa had in September asked the appeal court to nullify his life sentence conviction by the Ondo State High Court over the disappearance of one-year-old Gold Kolawole in his Church in 2019.

    Presenting his brief to the judges, in a sitting which was less than 20 minutes, Counsel to Prophet Babatunde Alfa, Chief Adegboyega Awomolo SAN said highpoints of his appeal was the charges against Alfa Babatunde which were conspiracy and aiding and abetting kidnapping.

    He told the court that at Sotitobire Church in a broad day light, a child was declared missing, the police was investigating and suddenly the DSS took over the investigation from the police.

    It was based on the investigation of the DSS that the appellant was tried and convicted.

    Awomolo argued that his grouse was that DSS did not have the power to take over the investigation from Police.

    The counsel to the  Prophet said the trial court convicted the appellant not because of any eyewitness or any confession, but he was convicted because of circumstantial evidence.

    He argued that for the totality of the findings of the trial court, the allegations could not be linked to Prophet Sotitobire on the basis of circumstantial evidence.

    He however urged the court to set side the judgment of the trial court which convicted the Appellant and sentenced him to life imprisonment.

    Presenting his own brief, the attorney General and commissioner for Justice, Charles Titiloye argued in respect of the claims of counsel to the appellant that the DSS had no right to investigate and tender evidence in respect of the case.

    Tititloye argued that the DSS did carried the investigation because there was a threat to law and order when the issue of missing child broke out.

    He hinged his argument on the fact that after the alleged kidnapping,  there was serious tension in the town, as the church was burnt, many people were killed and property was destroyed.

    He said it was based on the crisis that erupted that made the DSS to take over the case, urging the appellate court to uphold the judgment of the high court.

    The presiding Justice, Rita Nosakhare Pemu after listening to all the arguments of both counsels reserved judgement and said a date would be communicated to all parties.

    It was gathered that the Joint Negotiating Council, JNC and the Trade Union Congress, TUC online news bulletin were circulated through social media to appeal to its members to exercise patience over the issue of salary payment.

    Below is the full text of the JNC & TUC bulletin;

    MATTERS ARISING FROM PAYMENT OF SALARY

    Considering the inflow for June 2021 as confirmed from FAAC allocation, and the expectation of the government on the N18.2b bailout from the federal government to be paid in six(6) tranches for six months; the Joint Negotiation Council resolved as follows:

    i) that the State Govt should Fastrack the receipt of two tranches out of the bailout on or before the ending of December 2021;

    ii) that the State Government should ensure payment of three months salary while workers will wait for a while;

    iii) the Council use this medium to appeal to all members on the pain that may occur within the period of waiting, we only believe in waiting to get something good from the government in the festive period.

    Solidarity.
    JNC Bureau of Information (November 25, 2021)

    FROM TUC: ATTENTION COMRADES.
    The government of Ondo State through the Head of Service on the 24th of November, 2021 invited leaders of TUC and NLC with the JNC also in attendance.

    Also in attendance was the Special Adviser to Mr Governor on Union Matters and Special Duties.

    The meeting was basically to appeal to the workforce to exercise patience on the issue of payment of salary.

    According to them, the State has received an allocation for the month but does not want to pay because it cannot pay a reasonable percentage. They expressed hope that government will soon receive the approved bailout to the States latest before mid-December.

    They expressed the desire of the government to pay nothing less than two Salaries that will be more than 100 per cent.

    They also explained that the bailout will not get to the States in a lump sum, therefore people should drop the rumour of receiving the whole money at once.

    They assured workers of the desire of the government to end percentage salary going forward.

    On the side of labour, it was emphatic that government must do all within its powers to end the suffering of workers by making good use of the opportunity of the bailout and other incomes of government because the economy of the State rests mainly with the workers.

    On the side of the TUC, we are using this medium to appeal to all of us to be calm while assuring us that within the said period, we shall all smile.
    Thanks.
