  • Insecurity: Tofowomo frown at Inadequate funding for police

    by

The Senator representing Ondo South senatorial district, Sen. Nicholas Tofowomo has criticized the current security challenge on inadequate funding by successive governments for the Nigeria Police Force.

Tofowomo said this while inspecting rehabilitation work on the burnt Okitipupa police station and area command through his sponsorship.

Recall that the structures were destroyed by hoodlums on Oct. 22, 2020, during the #EndSARS protest.

Tofowomo urged the Federal Government to strive towards ensuring adequate funding and equipping the police who played a vital role in ensuring the security of lives and property in the country.

“Policing in a large and diverse country like Nigeria needs enormous funding and sophisticated weapons, but the poor funding in yearly budgets of the police by the past government is responsible for the current situation.

“You will be surprised that the same police being condemned will have lived up to expectations if the government had improved their funding and give them sophisticated weapons,” he said.

Tofowomo who expressed satisfaction with the level of work at the police station and area command said that his concern for the safety of lives and property of his constituents made him bankroll the project.

He said that the rehabilitation work would be completed before Dec. 26, when the station would be commissioned and hand over to the police.

DSP Funmilayo Odunlami, the spokesperson for the police command in Ondo, lauded the senator for taking such a bold step to ensure the safety of residents.

Odunlami said this in a telephone interview with our correspondent on Tuesday.

“We thank the senator for his display of kindness and ensuring the safety of lives and property of residents, I appeal to our youths to stop the destruction of government property to press home their demands,” she said.

Oba Festus Olumoyegun, the Oniju of Iju-Odo also lauded Tofowowo for his gesture towards rebuilding the station, saying he has brought succour to the people of Ikaleland, even though he was not an indigene of the area.

The traditional ruler said that Tofowomo has proven beyond reasonable doubt that he can be trusted at all times and urged other politicians to emulate the gesture.

  • Power to grant, permit grazing reserves vests on governors – NBA Chairman

    by

    By Odunayo Ayodele

The Chairman of Nigeria Bar Association,(NBA) Okitipupa chapter, Chief Okorisa Orimisan James has said state governors are the only one empower by law to grant license or permit on grazing reserves in their respective states.

The Chairman in a chat with our correspondent, said the current plan by President Muhammadu Buhari to introduce grazing reserves in Nigeria as power extended too far to protect his Fulani kingsmen.

According to him, “grazing reserves in Nigeria are areas set aside for the use of pastoralists and are intended
to be the foci of livestock development.

“It also resembles group ranches in that, both
consist of clearly defined areas of rangeland which provides grazing for determined herds of
    livestock”.

“The purpose of grazing reserves is the settlement of ‘nomadic’ pastoralists; it’s offers the security of tenure as an inducement to sedentarization through the provision of land for
    grazing and permanent water.”

“By provisions of land use act, all land in any state of the federation is vested in the Governor of the State.

“Section 1 of the said Land Use Act categorically states that “all land comprised in the territory of State in the Federation are hereby vested in the Governor of that State and such land shall be administered for the use and common benefit of all Nigerians by the provisions of this Act.” Section 12 (1) of the same Act also states that:

“It shall be lawful for the Governor to grant a licence to any person to enter upon any land”, while subsection 5 thereof clearly states that “The Governor may cancel any such licence if the licensee fails to comply with any of the conditions of the licence,” Okorisa said.

He noted that most Nigerians don’t know that there’s an existing law against open grazing in Nigeria. It’s high time for all states in Nigeria to put this law into practice.

Hon. Justice Adewale Thompson’s 1969 Judgment on Open Cattle Grazing is a total ban. He held this.

“I do not accept the contention of Defendants that custom exists which imposes an obligation on the owner of the farm to fence his farm while the owner of cattle allows his cattle to wander like pests and cause damage.

“Such a custom, if it exists is unreasonable and I hold that it is repugnant to natural justice, equity and a good conscience and therefore unenforceable in that , it is highly unreasonable to impose the burden of fencing a farm on the farmer without the corresponding obligation on the cattle owner to fence in his cattle.”

“The sequence to that I banned open grazing for it is inimical to peace and tranquillity and the cattle owners must fence or ranch their animals for peace to reign in these communities.”

  • Stakeholders call for prevention of flooding in Southern Senatorial district

    by

    By Ola Johnson

In a bid to prepare for any eventuality of flooding in Ondo southern senatorial district, traditional ruler and other stakeholders from the zone have appealed to the state government to extend the channelisation of Rivers going on at the Central and Northern senatorial to the district of the state to the coastal area.

According to the traditional ruler, “we participated in a stakeholders consultation meeting called by the Minister of Environment on Aiyetoro Shore Protection Project in Abuja on 13 July 2021, but since then there has not been any feedback.

“As a precaution measure, I have mandated the Aiyetoro Emergency Response Team led by Captain Folajimi Iretolu, Aare Atuluse of Aiyetoro Community to prepare a preliminary master plan for evacuation which will be a platform to engage Government agencies in case of sea overrun of Aiyetoro.

“Sea rise and higher waves are prevalent during this season and we are following the Nigeria Metrology Services prediction,” the monarch said.

The Chairman, Irele Local Government, Mr Olusegun Ajimotokin urged residents to stop the habit of dumping waste in the drainage.

“The only effort we are making currently is the evacuation of waste from the drainage, nothing else can be done now until the dry season”

His Ilaje local government counterpart, Goke Jatuwase, said, he has only put in place manual channelisation of drainage to prevent over flooding.

Once the drainages are free of blockage, then flooding will reduce.

He said, “we thank God there has not been any casualties here in Okitipupa but prevention is better than cure.
