  • Insecurity: Protest rock Okitipupa as students kick against incessant attack by hoodlums on-campus/hostel

    by

    By Steve Daniel

Students of Olusegun Agagu University of Science and Technology, OAUSTECH, Okitipupa, Ondo State have called on the state Government, to as a matter of urgency order the security agencies to come to their rescue in curbing the incessant rape and robbery attacks on campus.

It will be recalled that some weeks ago, the students staged a peaceful protest over incessant robbery, molestation of their female students by hoodlums, threatening students with charms.

The students who believed that their previous protest has not earned them any positive response from the security agencies and the state government has staged another protest today Thursday 24 June 2021, since the incident continued to occur even till last night.

The student who blocked the Okitipupa-Igbokoda expressway does not allow total free-flow of commercial activities to let their grievances known to the public.

Speaking with the President of the Students Union Government of the school, Damilola Okunomo, said, last night experience was a bad one as the hoodlums came into the campus enmass to attack, which was massive than the previous attack.

He, therefore, called on the state government and well-meaning people in the neighbourhood to come to their rescue over incessant robbery and rape of students on campus and hostels as it is becoming more alarming.

“Just this last night, they came heavily armed to attack us. We can no longer sleep at night with our two eyes closed, we are living in panic on campus. We are here to learn and to be educated which can only be achieved in a conducive environment.

“These people came to our hostels, attacked us with guns, cutlasses, whether we are in academic session or not, they carted away, our shoes, clothes, phones, televisions among other belongings.

“Our lives are at stake because they come with arms and rape our students, we are tired of the insecurity of students lives and properties”.

“No fewer than four female students were raped two weeks ago, and the school management are not doing enough as we are the ones securing ourselves by waking as vigilantes most times, the situation is terrible.

“We urge the school management to do its best in securing us and complete all the uncompleted hostel’s accommodations in our campus as this will also give us a security guarantee,” Okunomo said.

The school management while speaking through the information officer, Mr Adebayo AbdulMajeed said the management had last week met with the Hostel builders, security agencies, stakeholders and council of Obas over insecurity on campus where a memorandum of understanding(MOU) was signed.

“Therefore, we are making move to combat insecurity on campus. We will not relent until we achieve a positive report”, he said.

  • OSOPADEC is dying, Mahin/Aheri/Etikan Youth Congress cries

    by

Mahin/Aheri/Etikan Youth Congress in Ilaje Local Government Area of Ondo State, has called on Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu to release and monitor the statutory 40% of the 13% oil derivation fund accruing to the Ondo State Government for the rehabilitation and development of oil-producing areas in the state.

Noting that the Commission has not embarked on tangible and sustainable projects in the past four years.

In a statement signed by the Chairman and Secretary of the group, Comrade Femi Williams and Comrade Ehuwa Omotayo, said the inability of the Governor to commission any single project in the oil-producing areas during the recent celebration of the second term 100 days in office is a true manifestation of the total neglect of the mandate areas.

The group also noted that the incapability of the Commission to execute and commission any tangible project in the mandate areas for the past four years is a signal that the Commission is garnishing for death which calls for rapid attention of Mr Governor and brings her to life for effective operation.

According to the statement, after the congress’s meeting held in collaboration with different youth organisations from Ilaje Constituency II in Igbokoda recently, appealed to the Governor to release and monitor 40% oil derivation accruing to the commission.

“OSOPADEC is dying, she needs rapid attention of Mr Governor by releasing the statutory fund accruing to the commission and also monitor and ensure the funds are used judiciously.

“Part III, section 7 (i) a & b function of the OSOPADEC Act which says, “the Commission shall receive and administer exclusively the 40% of the 13% oil derivation fund accruing to the Ondo State Government for the rehabilitation and development of oil-producing areas in the state; and other developmental projects as may be determined from time to time by the Commission”.

The group however frowned at the continuous neglect of the oil-producing areas despite the 40% of the 13% oil derivation fund accruing to the Ondo State Government for the rehabilitation and development of the areas.

“We believe that the Governor is a father who can father his children, so, we are not going to fight him for now but just calling his attention to the marginalisation and injustice done to the mandate areas which demands immediate attention on”.

The group appealed to the Governor to call the Commissioner for Finance, Accountant General, Government-related – Ministry of Finance and other government-related personnel to order against unnecessary delay in releasing OSOPADEC funds.

Urged the Governor to warn them against mismanagement, misappropriation and diversion of the OSOPADEC fund.

“We want to appeal to the Governor to give OSOPADEC life as a matter of urgency and liberate her from the present financial incapacitation she finds herself”.

  • Alleged rape: Baba Ijesha to be arraigned June 24

    by

Popular Yoruba actor, James Olanrewaju (also known as Baba Ijesha), will be arraigned on Thursday before a Special Offences Court sitting in Ikeja on allegations of sexual assault of a minor.

He will be arraigned before Justice Oluwatoyin Taiwo on a six-count charge.

Particulars of the charge read: Indecent Treatment of a Child, Sexual Assault and Attempted Sexual Assault by Penetration contrary to Sections 135, 263 and 262 of the Criminal Law Ch C17, Vol. 3, Laws of Lagos State, 2015 and Sexual Assault by Penetration contrary to *Sections 259* Criminal Law Ch C17, Vol. 3, Laws of Lagos State, 2011.

Lawyers to Baba Ijesha have also filed an application for his bail before the court dated the 21st of June 2021.

Baba Ijesha has been in custody since his arrest on April 22.

He was granted bail on May 17 following an intervention by members of the Lagos State Judiciary in collaboration with the State’s Ministry of Justice in a move aimed at decongesting Police Stations in the State.

He was, however, unable to meet the bail conditions and remained in custody.

On the 16th of June, Baba Ijesha was arraigned by the police on a five count charge at a Chief Magistrate Court in Yaba. He pleaded not guilty.

His counsel, Kayode Olabiran, made a fresh application for bail.

He said, “Mr. Olanrewaju has remained in police custody because one of the bail conditions is yet to be met”.

“On May 17, the Ministry of Justice, the Judiciary, the NBA and the police took an initiative to decongest jam-packed cells across the State. My client was one of the beneficiaries and the conditions given were two sureties, one must be a blood relation and another surety not less than level 16 in the Lagos state government civil service.

“The elder brother to the defendant has appeared as a surety and we have paid the N500,000 bail bond to the account of the Lagos state government but we have not been able to get a level 16 officer to stand as surety,” Mr Olabiran said.

Explaining further, the lawyer said they got three different level 16 officers but one turned them down and two others declined upon hearing that they need to get a clearance letter from the head of service.

“The level 16 officers are afraid of being issued a query.

“We are applying for bail on a compassionate ground and in the interest of justice,” Mr Olabiran said, urging the magistrate to consider the visibly ill health of his client.

A counsel from the office of the DPP, Mobolaji Owoebute-Okedeji, opposed the bail application.

He said, “the matter has been already filed at the High Court, and he urged the court to refuse bail.

After considering all the submissions, Magistrate Peter Nwaka declined to grant the defendant bail because he no longer had jurisdiction over the matter

The magistrate said, “I have carefully considered the application of the counsel to the defendant seeking bail for the defendant and the opposition by the counsel from the DPP.

“Since there are indications that the matter is before the high court and the defendant will appear before the court, no bail can be given.

“The defendant must be accorded full medical attention by the authorities pending his arraignment at the high court,” the magistrate said.

  • Our people are suffering, NDYM Chairman, appeals to ODSG to give life to OSOPADEC

    by

The Chairman of Niger Delta Youth Movement (NDYM) in Ondo State, Comrade Akin Omojuwa, has appealed to the State Governor, Arakunrin Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, to give life to Ondo State Oil Producing Area Development Commission (OSOPADEC) for effective operation.

The Chairman appealed while commenting on the recent celebration of 100 days in office of Governor, noting that no single project was commissioned in Ilaje and Ese Odo Local Government.

Omojuwa noted that the Governor did not commission any single project in Ilaje Local Government despite the oil exploration in the area.

He, therefore, appealed to Governor Akeredolu to give life to OSOPADEC and ensure the Commission lives up to its expectations in the mandate area.

In his statement, he quoted Part III section 7 (i) a & b function of the OSOPADEC Act which says, “the Commission shall receive and administer exclusively the 40 percent of the 13 percent oil derivation fund accruing to the Ondo State Government for the rehabilitation and development of oil-producing areas in the state; and other developmental projects as may be determined from time to time by the Commission.”

He expressed the pains of the youths over the neglect of the oil-producing areas despite the 40 percent of the 13 percent oil derivation fund accruing to the Ondo State Government for the rehabilitation and development of the areas.

“We noticed that no single project was commissioned in Ilaje and Ese Odo Local Government by the Governor while celebrating his second term 100 days in office. This gave us a lot of worries and concerns

“We want to appeal to the Governor to give OSOPADEC life as a matter of urgency and liberate her from the present financial incapability to operate as expected.

“We still believe so much in his leadership and also know that he’s a ‘talk and do’ Governor that is why we are appealing to him.

Omojuwa also appealed to the Governor to call the Accountant General to order against unnecessary delay in releasing OSOPADEC funds.

  • Ondo court granted #EndSars protester bail

    by

The Ondo State High Court, sitting inside Olokuta Correctional Centre (Akure Prisons), in Akure, the state capital, granted bail to kemisola Ogunniyi, the detained #EndSars Protester who delivered a baby in the Prison, to the sum of N10 million with a surety.

The bail is coming a day to the naming ceremony of the baby.

It would be recalled that Kemisola Ogunniyi was arrested along with 3 (three) other suspects, by the Ondo State Command of the Nigeria Police Force, during the curfew imposed in Ondo State in the wake of the #EndSARS protest in October 2020 and was accused of setting ablaze the APC Secretariat during the protest.

Kemisola was charged for arson, conspiracy, riotous assembly, stealing and malicious damage.

Granting the bail application, Justice Omolara Adejumo cited Section 146, 150, 156 of the Ondo State criminal justice law, stressing that she was released based on humanitarian ground, and for the naming ceremony, adding that she has a right to be granted bail.

She added that the defendant should be bailed with the sum of N10 million with a surety.

Justice Omolara however faulted the trending of the issue on the social media space.

Earlier, the Prosecuting Counsel led by Omotola Cicilia prayed the court to grant the bail of the defendant.

She added that “It was on the 17th of June 2020 that the office of Attorney General was served a bail application by a new Counsel (Tope Temokun Esq) engaged by Kemisola Ogunniyi”.

Meanwhile, Counsel to the defendant, Tope Temokun, expressed satisfaction with the release as well as the bail condition.

He noted that the 3 (three) other suspects, arrested by the Ondo State Command of the Nigeria Police Force, during the curfew imposed in Ondo State in the wake of the #EndSARS protest in October 2020 and was accused of setting ablaze the APC Secretariat during the protest.

According to him,” there is nothing negative about this issue, the whole world knew that a boy was born and am very sure that tomorrow, the whole world will also know the name of that boy. The boy has been announced to the world and is very confident that the boy is going to be great.

According to Temokun, “We were fighting that Kemisola should not deliver in prison but she eventually delivered in prison, the noise was everywhere, so if we say we don’t want the naming ceremony in the prison custody, it is still part of the agitation to get her released and thank God, she has been released.

He added that “it’s not about negativity when we talk about prominent people in the world, most of them have been to the prison. Is it Mandela or Buhari? Obasanjo or Yaradua? He questioned.”

According to Temokun, “I am confidently telling you that the quest to release Kemisola from prison is not about any negativity because I know that the boy is already born great and people are eager to know the baby’s name and they are ready to attach importance to the name. Am sure that he’s coming up great.”
