  • Ondo 2020: Factors that Will Favour Akeredolu

    By Martins Fasusi

    Introduction

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has fixed October 10, 2020 for the Ondo State Governorship Elections. However, the successful outcome of the Edo State election despite the initial hiccups has made attention to be sifted to Ondo State for the electoral umpire(INEC) to consolidate on the gains recorded in Edo state by making the outcome of Ondo Election to be free, fair and credible..

No doubt,  the election would be keenly contested among three major parties and candidates, the incumbent governor, Oluwarotimi Akeredolu (SAN) will be seeking his second term ambition in office under the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC),   the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Eyitayo Jegede (SAN) who lost to Akeredolu in 2016. And of course, the new entrance, Hon. Agboola Ajayi, the estranged deputy governor of Akeredolu now the candidate of the Zenith Labour Party (ZLP) currently enjoying the support of the immediate past governor, Dr. Olusegun Mimiko.

Aketi as fondly called by his admirers is a man of many parts who has made his marks within the three and half years in office despite the limited resources  caused by the sharp dropped from the price of oil revenue acquiring from the federation account to the states which is the mainstays of the country’s economy coupled with the effects of the Covid 19 pandemic that has crippled the state revenue generation.

It would also be recalled that the last administration left a  whooping debt of #220 billion and 7 months of unpaid workers salaries even after the experience of oil boom within the first six years of that administration .

In contrast to over #38 billion naira  surplus inherited from Agagu administration  when his tenure was terminated by the appeal court judgement.

    Akeredolu’s scorecards

    1.  Infrastructural Development . Infrastructural development is very key on the success of any economy.

It remains the driving force of the economy.

Akeredolu achievements on infrastructural development is unprecedented in the history of the state .

Even his critics cannot fault him on infrastructural development ,  he devoted more resources on infrastructural development than stomach infrastructure perhaps that has been his greatest sin.

Not only did he embarked on massive road construction across the 18 LGAs,  Akure the State capital is wearing a new look with virtually all the major roads been dualized  so as really make it a befitting state capital.

As we speak,  more than 400kilometers of roads network have been constructed and rehabilitated across the state .

He initiated and constructed the first interchange fly over in Ore, Odigbo LGA to reduce rate of accidents along the Benin/ Ore express way which has claimed many innocent lives  and, also to checkmate the unnecessary time wasting of commuters and travellers along the highway.

The dreaded Oke Alabojuto, Ikare road is now a  dual carriage way.

Work is also  at  advanced stage on the Araromi –   Ibeju Lekki in Lagos State which when completed will open up the economic potential of the state to mentioned but few .

Workers Welfare : Though,  Akeredolu has never considered prompt payment of workers salaries and emoluments as an achievement.

It is important to emphasize that Akeredolu has prioritized the regular payment of salaries and  six out of the seven months of unpaid salaries inherited from the last administration has been paid .

Don’t forget, the last administration received between #12billlion to #10billlion from the federation account while Akeredolu has been earnings less than #5 billion from the federation account.

Thus, the need for comparison. Yet,  Akeredolu has never owned any public workers.

Security : On the area of security,  Akeredolu government  refused to play politics with the lives of the citizenry even against his second term ambition.

At a point, Akeredolu was at logger head with the federal government  and the inspector general of police due to his stand on the establishment of the Western Nigeria Security Network  codenamed “Amotekun” to complement the police and other security outfits in the country.

The security outfit which is now helping to nip in the bud, the rate of incessant kidnapping, rapping, rituals and other heinous crime in the state .

Health.  The government of Akeredolu has embarked on massive renovation of various primary health care centers across the 203  political wards in the State.

On the strength of equity and justice, the two mother and child hospitals in the state have been extended to seven across the three senatorial district in the state .

Also, Akeredolu built a new a critical care unit at the teaching hospital in Akure while the construction of a 500 bed hospital both in Akure and Ondo town teaching hospitals is going on simultaneously.

Akeredolu administration is also the first to commence the contributory health insurance scheme which has provided free health care services for children under age of five and pregnant women to mentioned but few.

Agriculture : To ensure food security and to diversify the economy of the state, agriculture has been given it rightful place with over 10,000  youths in the State currently engaging in one form of agricultural practices and the other.

The  afforestation projects of the State has been reactivated with over 10,000  hectares  of land at Omotosho,  Okitipupa LGA already put in place,  the project worth #20 billion and it has employed over 1000  youths of the State. Over 6000  youths have been trained and empowered to become  agripreneurs.

It is also on record that over 35,000  farmers have been mobilized for the anchor borrowers scheme.

The establishment of Igba Otun broiler scheme where farmers were given minimum 2000  day old chicks with feeding and vaccines.

Fertilizers and other farm inputs were provided and distributed to farmers on regular basis.

Industrialization : Akeredolu has successfully changed the narrative of the State from a civil servant driven into an industrialized economy.

No fewer than seven investors have brought their businesses into the Ondo/ Linyi industrial hub where over 16,000  job seekers have been taken from the employment market.

The establishment of cassava to ethanol factory which produces 300 metric tonnes of ethanol per day has helped to reduce Nigeria’s import bill on ethanol which stood at #160biliion annually.

The Medium density fibre plywood factory,  paper production factory, Win – win textile industry and Dongfeng Trucks Assembly Plants will help to transform the economy of the state.

The commissioning of the sunshine chocolate factory, Alade Idanre with an initial processing capacity of about 28 metric tons to 2.8 Million of chocolate.

Also,  the egg factory at Emure Ile with a daily need of 500,000 eggs when completed, will save the Federation Government 30 billions  dollars used to import eggs annually and equally create more than 10,000 jobs.

And of course, the exploration and exploitation of the bitumen project in the State which has now become a reality with an indigenous company,  the South West Bitumen Exploration Limited which was reputable to be the largest in Africa securing a  25 years renewable operational mining license.

The biggest is the deep sea port with the studied required for the implementation and the environmental impact assessment already carried out, what remains is to obtain the port declaration from the Federal Government which will be done before the end of the year.

All these industries have the capacity to absorb 70,000 direct and over 300,000 indirect jobs that would change the fortune of the State, all these to Akeredolu’s credit.

    7.  Other Factors :  In the current political landscape, there are some other factors that will play key roles in the outcome of the election which tends to be in favor of the Arakunrin Oluwarotimi Akeredolu.

Factors such as  party structures, zoning arrangements,  need for continuity, choice of deputy governor, party’s  unity among others.

In terms party structures, only The All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic progress (PDP) appears to be formidable.

The Zenith Labour Party (ZLP)  currently purveyed by the immediate past governor, Olusegun Mimiko can be described as bedroom political party.

However,  The aftermath of PDP primaries and the choice of  Jedege’s deputy,  ikengbodu Gboluga has depleted the ranks of PDP across the state to the advantage of  APC and its candidate.

Akeredolu now enjoys a formidable team and a widespread supporters across the 18 LGAs due the immediate reconciliation with other aspirants of the party who lost the party ticket to him.

His ability to resolve the lingering crisis among the party bigwigs  and those splinter group within the party can confidently secure him the needed victory.

The choice of Lucky Ayedatiwa an Ilaje man as his deputy is also expected to play a major role in the election.

Ilaje LGA apart from been the largest LGA in terms of land mass and the third largest in voting strength has never produced a deputy governor since the creation of the state which might likely results in block votes for Akeredolu in Ilaje and Ikale axis when compared to the choice of the outgoing deputy governor,Agbola Ajayi, an apoi man from Ese Odo LGA.

The perception that the Northern District should allow to spend 8 years before going back to another Zone after the successful completion of 8 years of the central  district  would definitely brighten the chance of Aketi.

The rumor coming from Olusegun Mimiko  that he regretted supporting Eyitayo Jegede candidacy from the central district in 2016  might equally give Akeredolu an edge comes October 10, 2020

Putting all these factors side by side, it’s very obvious that Arakunrin Oluwarotimi Akeredolu is very close to victory.

  • GUBER POLL: Candidates Promise Better Ondo State

The Governornorship candidate of the All Progressives Party, APC, Oluwarotimi Akeredolu says the nation’s state of insecurity can best be addressed with the invention of community policing especially Amotekun.

He stated this at the last phase of the governorship debate tagged FACE THE VOTERS INITIATIVE, held in Akure.

Akeredolu opined that Amotekun would go a long way in addressing problems of herdsmen and other security issues at state levels, within the southwest region.

Describing Amotekun as a right step in the right direction, the SDP candidate, Prince Fasua however recommended qualitative mode of operation and better welfare for the Amotekun personnel.

Speaking on job creation, the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Mr Eyitayo Jegede who said Industrialization and Privatization of industries was the way out also made case for preservation of farm produce and motorable farm roads.

Governor Akeredolu explained that the tuition charged at Adekunle Ajasin University at Akungba Akoko was reasonable enough while Mr Jegede believed that the tuition should accommodate wards and children of the less privileged.

The fourth candidate scheduled for the debate, Mr Agboola Ajayi of the Zenith Labour Party, ZLP did not show up for the exercise.

  • Ondo Guber: APC thugs turn Akure into city of gunfire

    Press release

The capital city of Ondo State was kept awake last night and has continued into Sunday as the APC led battalion of Thugs with Idajo at the helm of affairs causing mayhem in Akure.

PDP supporters were attacked in their homes with gunfire raging across the city including Byepass, Isolo, Obanla, Okeijebu all the way to Agbogbo and the Expressway but to mention a few. The APC chieftain D I Kekemeke threatened it and Idajo is executing the script unrestrained.

An eye-witness reported that a shoot at sight mission is happening as they grossly invaded Opomulero office at Byebass, Akure.

The Thugs who got to the scene around 7.30pm were fully armed with sophisticated ammunitions and rained guns shot sporadically at the office complex where many were reported to have sustained different degrees of injuries. They are now receiving treatment in an undisclosed hospital.

It was also reported that these contracted APC Thugs are now in towns in their hundreds hunting for whoever that is putting on Eyitayo’s cap and other soveniers with Jegede’s inscription to violently attack such.

We believe this a deliberate attack given that Akure South LGA is a stronghold of Eyitayo Jegede SAN and it is aimed at creating major voter apathy amongst the determined electorate, by creating fear of endangering their lives if they go out to vote on Saturday.

The unprovoked attacks have been escalating in the last few weeks and the APC thugs in the absence of arrests or intervention by the law enforcement agencies.

We call upon President Buhari and the Inspector General of Police, CP, DSS and other Security Authorities to urgently arrest this ugly situation which has already resulted in several deaths and needless destruction of property.

E-signed: Gbenga Akinmoyo, Spokesman Eyitayo Jegede Campaign Organisation.

    By Bombay Ladi-Okunniga.

Torrents of singing, dances, cultural display and speeches poured in yesterday as Okitipupa LG APC staged simultaneously rallies in all the Communities making up the local government to herald the coming October 10 Ondo State Gubernatorial Election.

The Heaven itself was pleased as there was clement weather throughout the period of the rallies.

At Iju Odo Rally the home town of Pastor Femi Agagu, Commissioner of Education, Science and Technology declared that “by our wonderful outing today, Arakunrin Oluwarotimi Akeredolu has earned the trust of our people”.

“Equally, his ongoing massive endorsements and Supports is due to the will of God and purity of his heart, that is why Akeredolu will continue to thrive above his co-contestants and that is also the reason why anyone trying to pull him down will continue to labour in vain”, declared Agagu.

In the words of SUBEB Executive Chairman Princess Oladunni Odu who was over joyous at the massive turnout of people of her own town ( Okitipupa ) said, “those who are ganging up against Arakunrin Oluwarotimi Akeredolu will on October 10 face the reality of the futility of their aspirations… Akeredolu is God’s own project”.

Continued, the Okitipupa born Politician said “what count in governance is performance and Akeredolu’s busy schedule in terms of provisions of modern infrastructural facilities should be appreciated by all and should supersede Politicial hustling….so far so good our ‘Talk and Do’ governor has demonstrated the capacity to be a change agent with his outstanding performance so far”.

  • Several injured as APC, PDP supporters clashes in Akure

Pandemonium in Akure as youths suspected to be supporters of the All Progressives Congress and the Peoples Democratic Party has thrown residents of Oba Nla, Oba Adesida, Arakale and Oja Oba areas of Akure into confusion.

The clash between the two parts made  residents and passers-by of these affected areas scampered for safety.

Vehicular movement was halted during the clash for several minutes

  • Ondo Poll: Ilaje, Ese-Odo LGA’s as rigging flashpoints – INEC

Ahead Ondo State gubernatorial election slated for October 10, 2020 the Independent National Electoral Commission says it has enlisted the help of the military, police and other security agencies to flush out threats to the peaceful conduct of the exercise, especially in the creeks and other black spots in the state.

The commission noted that there were 62 creeks and more than 270 Polling Units in the riverine areas of Ese-Odo and Ilaje Local Government Areas of the state.

INEC’s National Commissioner and Chairman of its Information and Voter Education Committee, Festus Okoye, told newsmen in an interview that the commission was in touch with the Nigerian Navy and Marine Police to protect and escort the commission’s personnel and materials to the difficult terrains.

He added that the commission would leave no stone unturned to prevent rigging and violence in the election.

In previous elections in the state, the riverine communities had often been identified as flashpoints, given the peculiarity of the terrain as security agents often encountered difficulties in navigating the terrain.

“The police, Navy and other security agencies have been mandated to engage in clearance operation and flush out groups and individuals that threaten the peace of the state and the electoral process especially in the creeks and other black spots.

“More than 270 of our Polling Units are in the riverine areas of Ese-Odo and Ilaje Local Governments, with over 62 creeks, and we are in touch with the Nigerian Navy and the Marine Police for the purpose of protecting and escorting our personnel and materials to these difficult terrains.

“The security agencies will carry out mop up operations, deploy adequate platforms and conduct massive show of force especially in identified flashpoints. We will continue to appeal to the political parties and the candidates to eschew violence.”Okoye said.

Meanwhile, It was also gathered that each polling unit is usually manned by between four and five election officers. Thus, given that there are no fewer than 270 polling units in the riverine areas out of the 3,009 in the state, the number of staff in the area would be about 1,080.

“Section 29(3) of the Electoral Act, 2010 (as amended) gives the commission the power to request the assistance of any section of the Armed Forces for the delivery and protection of its staff and materials during elections.

“We shall therefore request for the assistance of the Navy for escort in the riverine areas, and the Army will block the entrance and exit out of Ondo State on election day.” he added.

Meanwhile, the Director of Programmes, YIAGA Africa, a popular election observer group, Cynthia Mbamalu, said previous election observation reports revealed that elections in riverine areas were usually susceptible to rigging due to poor logistics management, threat to life, violence and non-compliance with INEC guidelines.

She said in the 2016 governorship election in the state, YIAGA Africa’s Watching the Vote received most of its critical incidents from Ilaje LGA, one of the riverine LGAs.

She added, “To avoid election fraud and manipulation in this election, we need better coordination between the security agencies and INEC to ensure that effective security is provided for the INEC/polling officials for the safe and early deployment of materials to polling units and in securing the polling officials and polling units on election day.

This would include ensuring that there is an effective transport plan that has proper security for the movement of personnel and materials to polling units in the riverine areas. The security agencies, especially the police should ensure effective and sufficient deployment of professional personnel to the polling units in riverine LGAs and the LGAs already identified as hotspots/flashpoints.

Calling on INEC to ensure consistency in the application of its guidelines and ensure the use of the Z-pad to upload the result sheet on the INEC Result Viewing portal, she added, “INEC and the police need to ensure that any of their officials involved in electoral fraud faces disciplinary actions and that electoral offenders are arrested and prosecuted. Finally, INEC should ensure that all its personnel deployed are adequately insured.”

Also, the Director, Centre for Democracy and Development, Idayat Hassan, called on INEC to know that not just political thugs posed a threat to elections in the riverine areas, militants and cult members were also culpable.

She added, “On deployment of logistics, INEC must make special plans to ensure that materials arrive on time in these riverine areas to prevent apprehension. Secondly, in previous elections, the results from the Ilaje and Ese-Odo were often the last to arrive at the collation centre.

“It is imperative that INEC use her new technology on result collation to ensure transparency, so in these difficult areas, results must be quickly uploaded. This timely upload will be of immense benefit.

“There is also the need for security deployment to protect materials and personnel. It is important to note that in this area that it is not just political thugs the election is contending with, militants, cult members and some stakeholders are also threats. We don’t just need deployment in numbers, effective and non-partisan deployment is key.”

Also, the Convener, Coalition in Defence of Nigerian Democracy and Constitution, Ariyo-Dare Atoye, called for surveillance in the air and on water in the coastal areas.

He added, “Every INEC staff that would be posted to these riverine areas and other sensitive locations must be kitted with a technological device that can trigger necessary alarm in a central location in Akure and Abuja once there is a major incident or danger is cited.

“Since it is a three horse race in the state, tension should lessen ahead of the elections, but nothing can be taken away from desperate politicians. INEC must call for and ensure security surveillance on water and in the air around these riverine areas
