In a significant development, the House of Representatives Joint Committee on Population and Anti-Corruption held an investigative hearing today to address the prolonged delay in the release of National Identity Cards spanning from 2012 to the present.

In a statement by his Media Director, Mr Victor Adedeji, at the meeting, the chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on National Population Commission, Hon. (Prince) Okunjimi Odimayo, said the meeting aimed to uncover the root causes of this delay, which has adversely affected citizens across the nation.

He highlighted the government’s commitment to bolstering national identification systems, also
emphasized the critical need for timely and efficient service delivery underscored by this inquiry.

    The full speech read;

SPEECH BY THE CHAIRMAN, HON. JIMI ODIMAYO ON INVESTIGATIVE HEARING TO ASCERTAIN THE DELAY ON THE RELEASE OF NATIONAL IDENTITY CARDS FROM 2012 TO DATE

    Thursday, 14 March, 2024

    Deputy Chairman
    Honorable Colleagues
Hon. Minister of Communications, Innovations and Digital Economy
Director General of National Identity Card Management Commission
    Directors of Various Departments
    The Secretariat
Gentlemen & Ladies of the Media
    Ladies and Gentlemen

It is my pleasure to welcome you all to this Investigative Hearing with the Joint Committees on Population and Anti-Corruption.

On Wednesday, 7 February 2024 the House deliberated and resolved to mandate the Joint Committees on Population and Anti-Corruption to ascertain the delay on the release of National Identity Cards from 2012 to date.

The House feels the Legislature has to play its role in line with Section 88(1) (a) (b) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 (as amended). Because of this provision, the Committees are vested with this mandate.

This clarion call has become necessary since the National Identity Card Management Commission (NIMC) as established by the law is charged with the responsibility of collecting, managing, and controlling citizen’s data for effective economic planning and development growth. The Commission also agreed with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to implement the presidential directive on harmonization and integration of Biometric Data captured by Government parastatals. The directive aimed to improve biometric data capture among Government agencies and enhance Identity Management but, the Commission’s headquarters and its state counterparts are ineffective in delivering this National assignment to the people, particularly in releasing the National Identity cards for the benefit of all Nigerians.

It is to this effect and furthering on the mandate of the motion that these Joint Committees convey this Interactive session in which we are all to interact on the critical issues for the delay on the release of National Identity Cards from 2012 to date before we go on a full-blown Public Hearing as circumstances may warrant.

My Honorable Colleagues, the Honorable Minister of Communications, Innovations and Digital Economy, and Director General of the National Identity Card Management Commission, I want to assure you that we will leave no stone unturned in the discharge of our responsibilities on any matter referred to the Committees by bringing our various competences to bear in every issue.

I welcome us all to this Hearing.

    Thank you

    Hon. Jimi Odimayo
    Chairman, Committee on Population.

  • Anthony Joshua Knocks Out Francis Ngannou In round 2

    by

Anthony Joshua needed just two rounds to see off Francis Ngannou in their much-hyped heavyweight showdown in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

Former UFC champion Ngannou was taking part in just his second boxing match following an impressive display in his debut against Tyson Fury. However, the power of Joshua proved too much with the Brit proving his title credentials once more.

Anthony Joshua produced a fantastic and powerful display to knock out former MMA fighter Francis Ngannou in just the second round of their heavyweight clash in Riyadh.

Ngannou stunned the world when he floored Tyson Fury in November before losing a controversial split decision and was looking for similar against former two-time world champion Joshua.

The Cameroonian started well and threatened with the left hook before partially landing a looping right but he was stunned by a straight right from Joshua that sent him to the canvas in a dramatic opening round

Both men came out swinging in the second. Joshua ducked under a jab to find a home for another strong right before the same shot floored Ngannou for the second time.

The former UFC champion returned to his feet and carried on but Joshua ended the contest in incredible fashion, marching forward and unleashing a right hand that knocked Ngannou out cold.

It was a fourth successive win for AJ following back-to-back losses and set up a potential future showdown with the winner of May’s unification bout between Oleksandr Usyk and Fury.

  • Ilaje Development Summit Group commends Aiyedatiwa over appointment of permanent secretaries

    by

A Sociocultural Group, Ilaje Development Summit Group (IDSG), on Friday commended Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa of Ondo State for following due process and ensure merit in appointing permanent secretaries in the state.

This is contained in a statement made available to newsmen in Akure by the Deputy Executive Director of IDSG, Mr Ola Judah.

Gov. Lucky Aiyedatiwa had recently appointed 16 permanent secretaries in the state.

The group said the recent appointment of permanent secretaries, as evidenced in the comprehensive release issued by the Head of Service, Mr Bayo Philip, demonstrated adherence to official criteria and due process.

The group said it was noteworthy that many of the newly appointed permanent secretaries had previously served as Heads of Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs), further validating the merit-based nature of the appointment.

“As stakeholders in the development and progress of our community, IDSG recognises the importance of upholding established criteria in such appointments.

“We acknowledge the critical role of seniority among qualified officers as a major criterion, alongside the exercise of discretion by the governor.

“The recent appointments, as evidenced by the comprehensive release issued by the Head of Service, Mr Bayo Philip, demonstrate adherence to official criteria and due process.

“IDSG notes with satisfaction that civil servants, being the direct stakeholders, have not raised complaints, affirming the legitimacy of the appointments.

“We applaud Mr Bayo Philip for his astute handling of the release, which effectively enlightened civil servants and the public about the positions of the appointees before their formal appointments.

“This approach not only fosters transparency but also mitigates potential politically-motivated tensions among civil servants,” the group said.

The group later congratulated the newly appointed permanent secretaries and Head of Service, and prayed for God’s guidance upon them.

IDSG later frowned at criticism directed towards governor over the appointment of the permanent secretaries, which it said was politically motivated to distract him.

“The group finds it shameful for people from Ilaje, the Governor’s ethnicity, to participate in criticizing him with no justification. The spirit of Brother kill Brother – BKB is of Mr Cain.
Can you be constructive in your criticism for once? ” the statement concluded.
