Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA), on Wednesday, insisted that all the commercial motorcycles impounded in the city would be crushed.
Mrs Deborah Osho, Head of Operations, Directorate of Road Transport Services, FCTA, stated this during a clampdown operation on commercial motorcycles operators in Abuja.
Osho said that the operation was in line with the law that banned the operations of commercial motorcycles in the city.
She said that the continued operation of commercial motorcycles in the FCT had evolved from traffic offences to serious security breach.
This, she said, had necessitated government intervention in order to to curb the activities of commercial motorcyclists.
“There is an existing ban on the operation of commercial motorcycles in the city and that is what we are here to enforce.
“We have just impounded some of them and we are going to crush them for security reasons.
“The operators should not come near the city. If you want to operate, go to where it is approved in the suburbs and other rural areas.
“Commercial operators of motorcycles are not welcome in the city,” she said.
Also speaking, Dr Peter Olumuji, Secretary, Command and Control Centre, FCTA Department of Security Services, said that the operation was part of efforts to curb criminality in the city.
Olumuji said that the recent arrests of kidnapping suspects revealed that commercial motorcycles were being used for quick escape after committing crime.
He insisted that crushing the impounded motorcycle would strengthen the enforcement of the ban on their operations in the FCT and enhance the security and safety of residents.
The News Agency of Nigerian (NAN) reports that the operation was carried out on major highways in the city, namely: Kubwa, Airport Road, Apo and Lokogoma.
However, some Abuja residents have kicked against the incessant crushing of impounded motorcycles.
They said that destruction of motorcycles should rather be replaced with stiffer fines or the auctioning of such motorcycles for use in areas where their operations were not banned.
According to the residents, the heavy fines will discourage riders from veering into areas where their presence was not permitted.

Distinguished members of the press, esteemed colleagues, TRM Campaign team across the 18 Local Governments, supporters, and fellow citizens of Ondo State.
I want to sincerely appreciate all our people who arrived here from different locations in Ondo State; North, Central and South, defying all odds just to be part of this historical gathering.
I stand before you today with a profound announcement. I stand before you with a strong conviction awaiting declaration.
For many months, I have traversed the length and breadth of our state listening to your aspirations, your concerns, your hopes, your fears about the future of our Sunshine State. I have been to Akoko through Owo and Ose. Ose, where my darling wife is proudly from. I have visited the riverine Ilaje and Ese Odo through the beautiful homes of the Ikales – Irele and Okitipupa. Okitipupa – the home of Oil Palm; where I had my basic primary education. Also from Akure North, where I had my secondary school education down to the Oloyemekuns – Akure, Ifedore, Idanre, ile oluji/okeigbo and to the Ekimoguns in Ondo. To my people in Odigbo Local Government, today is historic.
I will always congratulate the people of Ore. Not only because I was birthed and grew up here, but because Ore by location is strategic and divine. Permit me to briefly market my product, Ore.
In 1983, Awolowo was here in Ore. And on this particular field and made some prophetic declarations which are gradually unfolding.
You will also agree with me that previous governors and governorship aspirants like Agagu, Mimiko flagged off their campaigns from this particular venue. Here, we are today.
It will not be out of place today to let the world know the significance of the mega city in embryo called Ore. The gateway between the South South/South East and South West. It may interest you to know that Biafra war ended in Ore. “Ija Ore, Ole ku”.
Ore, small Lagos as fondly called is another city that accommodates all tribes in Nigeria and they live in harmony. Credit to the Odigbo indigenes for their accommodating spirit.
Here we are today in Ore to declare for Mr Orisimisan. “Ori Wa Ti San L’Ore”.
As you are all aware that I announced my decision to run for the number one seat in Ondo State out of my strong desire to bring the desired positive, transformative change to governance. I believe our state is begging for a purposeful leadership that can galvanize the people on the right path of progress and prosperity.
I strongly believe that God is the ultimate giver of power, and power is giving as it pleases Him, and in the case of Ondo State, the emergence of Governor Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa is undoubtedly a divine order. The events of the last five (5) months in Ondo State affirmed that.
I cannot but extend my appreciation to the father of our dear nation today, President Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, for the fatherly role and timely intervention he exhibited when the Sunshine ship was at the edge of sinking. We are indeed grateful and Lucky to have you at this time.
In the short tenure of Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa, I have witnessed a leader of exceptional character, an outstanding performer who is seeking to continue the developmental strides of our late Governor, Oluwarotimi Odunayo Akeredolu, SAN. His dedication to the well-being of our state, his measured approach to governance, and the wisdom he brings to the table have profoundly impacted my decision to step down and declare my support for him.
Let me be clear: my decision to step down from the race is not borne out of fear or inadequacy. It is, instead, a testament to the power of recognizing the exceptional leadership style and achievement of Mr Governor within a short time; the genuine counsel and advice from recognised elders and political leaders within and outside the state that we share the same political ideology: and my commitment to putting the needs of the people above my ambition.
It is on these grounds that I have decided to drop my governorship ambition and declare my absolute support for Governor Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa beyond 2025.
I am declaring my support for a man who has a good blend of what Ajasin, Adefarati, Agagu, Mimiko and Akeredolu represented by ideology.
I am stepping down for an administrator who is not only cool, calm and courageous but has the leadership skills and qualities to move this state to higher level.
Believe me, Orimisan will deliver.
I am supporting a man whose decisions, actions and programs are guided by public interest, genuine love and concern for the masses.
I’m here before you to throw my weight behind a good listener, deep thinker and a great teacher. A leader with great empathy, accessibility and simplicity. These you can’t take from Gov. Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa.
My fellow aspirants and citizens of Ondo State, let us rise above the divisiveness of campaigns and embrace the opportunity for unity and cohesion within the party and under a leader who embodies the true values we hold dear. Together, under Governor Aiyedatiwa’s leadership, we can build a more prosperous, equitable, and vibrant Ondo State for ourselves and generations to come.

Inmates in the Correctional Centre in Jos, Plateau State capital, on Friday, protested the plan to reduce their food ration.
It was gathered that the protest followed a tip-off on the downward review of their food size.
The increasing cost of living in the country sparked demonstrations as youths and women from various parts of the country took to the streets to voice their concerns, joined by the Nigerian Labour Congress to protest the economic challenge.
Protesting the development, the inmates reportedly refused to take orders from the custodial officials while shunning their breakfast.
The custodial officials, however, used tear gas to force them back to their rooms, gathered in the centre of the prison yard, the prisoners were shouting at the top of their voices.
Confirming the development, the Comptroller of the Jos Correctional Centre, Raphael Ibinuhi, said the decision to reduce the food ration was prompted by the high cost of living in the country.
Ibinuhi said, “The problem has to do with the high cost of goods in the market. The contractor in charge of the food said they are being forced by the price of food items to reduce the size of the plate of food.
“So, it is the food size that provoked the protest. I don’t think the protest is necessary because the food challenge and the cost of items a national issues that the Federal Government is already addressing.
“And I want to believe that since it is a national issue, whatever step is taken by the Federal Government to address it will be felt everywhere in the country including the correctional centres.”
– Directs security agencies to arrest perpetrators
The attention of Ondo State Governor, Hon. Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa, has been drawn to reports of alleged attacks on some persons and destruction of campaign materials in the wake of the visit of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to the State on Wednesday.
The Governor says his administration will not tolerate any form of violence that is capable of threatening the peace and tranquility of the State.
As the Governor has said repeatedly, any political campaign that disturbs the peace in the State is unacceptable and must be met with the decisive actions of law enforcement agencies.
It is pertinent to make it clear that nobody associated with the Governor or the government of Ondo State was involved in any of the reported activities ascribed to “political thugs” during the President’s visit to Owo and Akure.
The Governor has therefore asked law enforcement agencies in the State to arrest and prosecute anyone found to be engaged in such violent activities.
The Governor urges politicians and their followers to ensure that their campaings are issue based, devoid of blackmail, spreading falsehood, inciting the public, and intimidating opponents.
