  • Akeredolu approves N35,000 wage award to workers

    by

The Ondo State Government has said that all arrangements have been concluded to commence the payment of the thirty-five thousand naira wage award announced by the Federal Government to its workers.

The state Head of Service, Pastor Kayode Ogundele, FCIPM, dropped the hint at this month’s edition of the monthly meeting between the government and the leadership of labour after monthly receipt from the federal allocation.

The Head of Service disclosed that workers would begin to receive the wage award alongside their November salary, adding that it would be paid for six months.

While restating the commitment of the Ondo State Government to the well-being of its workforce, Ogundele recalled the state had commenced monthly payment of an additional ten thousand naira to all its retirees and provided buses to commute workers to and from work to assuage the hardship occasioned by the fuel subsidy removal even before the announcement of palliative arrangements by the federal government, making the state one of the first states to take such steps.

According to him, other measures put in place as palliative measures would continue to run concurrently with the payment of wage awards until a lasting solution is found to the current economic situation in the country.

He added that the arrangement was almost completed to capture pensioners in the state’s health insurance scheme, Oranghis, which all workers are currently enjoying, noting that medicals formed the major expenses of most of the retirees.

He therefore urged workers to reciprocate the good gesture by re-dedicating themselves to excellent service while the union leadership should sustain the atmosphere of constructive engagement that is currently being adopted.

The state chairmen of the Nigeria Labour Congress, Comrade Victor Amoko, the Trade Union Congress, TUC, Comrade Clement Fatukasi, and the Joint Negotiation Committee, Comrade Ademola Olapade while reacting at the meeting, lauded the state government for listening to the yearnings of workers, particularly setting the pace in the southwestern states and some other parts of the country.

They however enjoined the government not to relent in its efforts to bring succor to the workers and retirees as the current economic situation in the country has rendered the current salaries of workers inadequate to meet their basic needs.

Earlier, the state Accountant General of the state, Mrs Toyin Oni, had presented before the meeting, the receipt from FAAC and the proposed disbursement template as it has been the routine since the inception of Governor Akeredolu’s administration.

  • Ex-CBN Governor Emefiele to remain in Kuje prison over failure to meet N300m bail

    by

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, on Tuesday, opened its case in the N1.2bn procurement fraud trial of the immediate-past Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Godwin Emefiele.

The trial opened before the Federal Capital Territory High Court, Abuja, with the EFCC calling three witnesses.

The embattled ex-CBN helmsman was brought to court from the custodial facility of the  Kuje Correctional Centre in Abuja, indicating that he had yet to meet the N300m bail granted him last week by the court.

The PUNCH reports that the EFCC arraigned Emefiele last week on six counts, wherein he was alleged to have committed the N1.2bn procurement fraud during his time as the CBN governor.

At the resumed proceedings on Tuesday, the prosecuting counsel for the EFCC, Mr Rotimi Oyedepo (SAN), called an official of the the Corporate Affairs Commission,

Samsideen Romanus, as the first witness.

In his testimony, the CAC official told the court that Emefiele was neither a shareholder nor the owner of April 1616, a company he was alleged to have used his office to illegally favour in the procurement process.

The second witness, a compliance officer with a commercial bank, Remigious Ugwu, told the court how various sums of money in millions of naira were paid by the CBN into the April 1616 Investment Limited.

    Ugwu said a sum of N39,060,465 was paid on October 19, 2020;  N421,953,488 on November 6, 2020, and N304,883,720 on November 23, 2020; N304, 883, 720  on January 1, 2021; and  N304, 883, 720 on March 23, 2021, by the Central Bank of Nigeria.

He told the court that none of the payments had Emefiele’s name, adding that he did not know the purpose of the payments.

The third witness, Deputy Director, Banking Services with CBN and former Secretary to the Major Contract Tendering Committee of the CBN, Oluwole Owoeye, said that his body was responsible for ensuring compliance with the Procurement Act.

But when cross-examined by Emefiele ‘s counsel,  Matthew Burkaa (SAN), Owoeye informed the court that his committee was not involved in the vetting of bidding for the award of contracts over which Emefiele is being prosecuted.

Justice Hamza Muazu adjourned further proceedings till January 18 and 19, 2024.
