The pump price of Premium Motor Spirit, popularly called petrol, was raised from N537/litre to N617/litre at some filling stations operated by the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited in Abuja on Tuesday.
Independent oil marketers confirmed the increase in the cost of the commodity, as they stated that any shift in price by NNPCL stations was an indication of a rise in the pump price of PMS.
“This is because NNPCL is still the major importer of petrol into Nigeria currently, though other marketers are gradually importing the commodity. The price this (Tuesday) morning at some NNPCL stations is N617/litre,” the Secretary, Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria, Abuja-Suleja, Mohammed Shuaibu, told our correspondent.
Recall that President Bola Tinubu had during his inaugural address on May 29, announced that subsidy on petrol had ended, a development that led to the jump in the price of the commodity from N198/litre to over N500/litre on May 30, 2023.
Since the withdrawal of subsidy on petrol and the floating of the naira against the dollar, marketers had continued to explain that the cost of PMS could rise to as high as N700/litre.
Similarly, the rise in the cost of crude oil in the international market has also triggered further hike in petrol price, as crude is the product from which PMS and other refined petroleum products are produced from.
In Abuja, on Tuesday morning, motorists besieged the filling stations that were still dispensing at N540/litre, but as the news of the hike in price by NNPCL stations filtered in, many independent outlets had to lock their stations.
Others immediately commenced the adjustment of their pumps to reflect the new price. The NNPCL and the downstream oil sector regulator had yet to make any statement on the development.

He added that the current Sunshine Queens, if maintained, will rule the women football in the country.
According to him, “I’m always at the training ground in Akure, monitoring them and I followed the team to FC Ebedei Stadium, Sagamu to watch one or two of their matches in the championship.
“Without mincing words, the team played to the admiration of the spectators at the venue.
“The team is a future of Nigeria Football, and that is why Ondo State Football Agency (ODSFA) and the ministry of Youth and Sports should develop interest in the current squad”.
“If the team is well managed, Ondo State will make a lot of revenue from the young players”.
As a scouting expert, I will advice the management of the team to guide against poaching of the players.

He stated this while speaking with newsmen, and prayed that God grant the Governor a quick recovery so that he can continue with his good work of the REDEEMED agenda for the good people of the ondo state.
The report had it in about three weeks ago, that about five men were drawn as a result of a boat mishap that occurred in ilaje local government area of the state, and many previous occupancies.
“I appealed to the government on behalf of the entire fishermen and other marine workers in the riverine community of ondo state vis a viz ilaje and Ese Odo local government to come to their aid in curbing the incessant boat mishap in the area.”
According to Gbayisemore, he said, the government has kept a deaf ears to this ugly incident without making any statement neither to sympathize with the families of the deceased.
“Your excellency, let us bring to your notice that this ugly incident has led to a low patronage from the Igbo traders that come to our locality for business transactions as the government has not provided any SAFTY measure for water commuters”.
“The removal of subsidy has worsening the situation of the people living in the riverine communities of ondo state, because it take an average of 200litrs of petrol @ #700 which accumulate to #120,000 to set out for fishing activities which is the main economy mainstay of the people in the riverine area of ondo state”.
“With the declaration of state of emergency in the food and agriculture sector by president Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the fishery sector should be considered as a critical sector that provides the cheapest protein source to the common Nigerian and 65% of total consumption rate come from the artisanal fishermen (FAO etal 2019).
Gbayisemore, therefore pleaded with the government to, as a matter of urgency make the water way safe for various marine businesses.
The artisanal fishermen should be adequately given special consideration for the proposed government palliative and supported with input and financial support.
Government should declare a state of emergency on the decay of infrastructure and less attention of the government on the lives of the people living on water. He appealed.
