  • Ondo deep seaport politics, Tinubu and the Imperative of voting APC

    By Richard Olatunde

This Saturday, the Nigerian electorate will march to the poll to elect the next President to succeed President Muhammadu Buhari whose tenure expires on May 29, 2023 after spending two – terms of eight years.

Beyond the sentiments and heated arguments that have dominated the polity since the campaigns were launched, it is important to understand the issues in the election and benefits of voting the right political party, particularly as it concerns our dear Sunshine State.

Our interest in who is elected must be driven by our thirst for development. Our recent experience in the nation has further established the importance of building economies in our domain.

Our national gaze must reflect fundamental changes. Our desire to build economic prosperity in our State must fire our decision to make a healthy choice. We must take the surest route to the harvest place.

In Ondo State, our Deep Seaport is the fast – lane to economic prosperity. Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu’s administration has expended efforts on actualising the dream of the Port Ondo. The Governor has repeatedly promised to give his all in ensuring that the people of the state ultimately enjoy benefits of the project. The Deep Seaport is a generational heritage. It will bequeath a self-reliant economy and secure a glorious and prosperous future for the generations yet unborn.

Among the three notable Presidential Candidates eyeing the presidency, the only one who has promised to develop the Port Ondo is the former Lagos State Governor and Presidential Candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu. During his campaign in the State in January, Tinubu said: “We will definitely develop Ondo Deep Sea Port.”

In Ilaje Local Government Area, the State has the deepest natural draught with the longest coastline in the West African sub-region, with the capacity to harbour any ship in the world. When the project comes to fruition, Ondo will become a nerve centre for socio-economic activities.

No doubt, if this project is actualised, it will improve the State economy and provide jobs for the good people of the state. Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) will shore-up and the lives of the people will be significantly improved. This will change the story of the Sunshine State forever.

In order to realise this noble aspiration, our people must make deliberate decisions on the future of the State. Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu understands the economic benefit of the Deep Seaport. It is a terrain he has navigated in Lagos State. He developed Lagos as one of the biggest economies in Africa. The APC Presidential candidate has the capacity and ability to develop the Ondo Deep Seaport, if elected.

Port of Ondo, according to Governor Akeredolu, is undoubtedly the much needed key to unlock the socioeconomic potentials of the Sunshine State as over Five Hundred Billion Naira investment inflows will come with the project.

The Federal Government under President Muhammadu Buhari had granted approval for the development of Ibom Deep Seaport, Badagry Deep Seaport among others. The politics behind the delay in declaring the Port Ondo is yet to be understood. In Ondo, you do not need to dredge. The coastline has a natural draught. This uniqueness should be enough to earn the state the much needed port declaration.

Our hope now rest on the shoulders of Asiwaju Tinubu’s presidency. He has promised. The ball is now in our court to deliver impressive votes that will show our seriousness and justify our quest for self – reliance. Governor Akeredolu has done his part. The Outline Business Case (OBC) highlighting the implementation plan of the port has since been submitted to the Federal Ministry of Transportation.

Our time to make the right choice is now. Our decision must reflect our desire to build a greater future for the state and our children. This is a matter of shared interests and our economic well-being. This is an important moment in our national history. Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu is the right choice for us in Ondo State.

Remember, Tinubu is our quickest route that leads to the harvest place. Come Saturday, let’s vote APC!

We must all resist the orchestrated conspiracy that was hatched to scuttle the victory of the ex- Lagos State Governor. Those who conspired to use fuel and naira scarcity to infuriate Nigerians hoping that it will lead to massive vote protest against the APC must be disappointed.

  • Atunluse sets to adopt a political party

    By John Kayode

A Socio Cultural/Political organisation, Atunluse Initiatives has said they are ready to work with any political party that has people oriented programmes in its plan as the 2023 General Election draw nearer.

The position was taken at the organization’s leadership meeting held in Akure, the state capital on Sunday 19th Feb, 2023.

The Atunluse Initiatives is a big umbrella with members cut across the 36 States and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

In his welcome address the Chairman of Atunluse Initiatives, Otunba Akinsola Akinbobola , explained that the organization stands for building a better Nigeria, where masses would have access to affordable health care, qualitative education and other basic amenities that bring comfort to human life

Akinbobola said that the leadership of the organisation will recognize and work with any political party that respects what Atunluse stands for, which is a birth of a New Nigeria that will recognise the need for a better society where human lives and comfortable living matter a lot to all and sundry.

According to him, the Labour party and New Nigeria Peoples Party NNPP have sought the Initiative’s support.

“We are going to x-ray both parties and adopt the one that share the same ideology with our organization. We shall also consult with some respectable leaders across the nation before deciding

He said Nigeria needed to be re -engineered to become a better place, reiterating that Atunluse Initiatives stands for creation of better life for the masses.

The chairman added that Nigeria has been divided more than ever before, saying, “there is no more love existing between various individuals and clans in the country.”

He said:”We started getting it wrong from various Individual homes, religious places and leadership institutions including government.”

According to him, the society enjoys celebrating affluence without verifying the source of such wealth. It’s very obvious and glaring
that government don’t care about the people anymore.

“Politicians are only thinking of how to enrich themselves without considering the negative impact on the masses, we no longer have united Nigeria”.

“We must start thinking of breaking this hardship circle in Nigeria, by doing what is right, reject their money on elections day and vote for candidates with credibility and capability to deliver.

“Nigerians used to live in a friendly community, but love has been lost in our society, peace has no where to stay, every body is now running helter skelter for survival,” he concluded.

The Coordinator of the organisation, Mr Shalom Olaseni, urged members of Atunluse to remain focused, saying,” a better Nigeria is possible if we can all do away with tribalism, ethnicity, nepotism and other negative vices.”

Olaseni assured the members that the leadership of the organisation will not lead them astray.

    by

A middle-aged Pastor of the Christ Apostolic Church (CAC), Oke Idahun, Oba-Ile, Akure, Pastor George Olusanya Omoolorun who shot a deer has been reported dead.

It was gathered that the Pastor shot the dear and his gun reportedly backfired killing him instantly.

The Pastor was in the habit of hunting wild animals until he met his untimely death during the hunting expedition last Sunday at Apeju Street, Oba-Ile, Akure North Local Government area of Ondo State.

  • “SUPREME COURT, ITS FINALITY IN LAWAL v MACHINAITS FALLIBLE WORD”

    by

    ,

    By Mallam Jimoh Saliu Esq.

Amidst of crunching economic and political woes, the Supreme Court of Nigeria handed down a decision in a matter between Senator Ahmed Lawan (the current senate President of the 9th National Assembly) and his political rivalry Mr. Machina over the actual winner of the primary election of the party in the Yobe North Senatorial District in Yobe State.

Being the apex court, its decision is final. However, its finality does not connote that its decision is utterly free from flaws. In the words of Hon Justice C. Oputa JSC of Blessed memory ‘we are final not because we are infallible, we are infallible because we are final’. The pyramid of the Supreme Court does not make it explainable to any authority within our jurisprudence.  The opinion of the public commands no baton within jurisdical norms but it shapes.

Getting to brass task, the Supreme Court dismissed the two decisions of the trial court and the lower court.  Beyond the cacophony, there has been myriads of reactions and counter reactions that has compellingly foregrounded the posture of Artemis in justice system.

The dismissal of the effort of your noble Lords at the previous courts with a wave of hand on the ground that the mode of filing the action at the court of first instance was not in compliance with the law.

Everybody’s mouth is agape.  To put it starkly, the people of Nigeria bemoaned our judiciary system.  For this, it cannot be our intention to join bandwagon but to beam the search light to some legal precepts and examine its core value in the light of prevailing principles and in one breadth pointing out its demerit.

As system of our law has its ancestry within the common law purview, every matter has its mode of commencement.  In respect of the matter under the consideration, the matter was initiated by way of originating summon.  It was done like that as a result of command whistle blew by the Chief Judge of the Federal High Court of Nigeria reduced into a practice direction that all the pre-election matters must be initiated by the originating summons.

Though apt as concisely stated, the directive is an order that enjoys the command.  Failure to comply, such matter might be taken the umbrage of the law.  Both the matter that had been filed and the one prepared to be filed are commanded to comply.

The Supreme Court sparked up bewilderment with its decision that because of mode of initiating the action under the spotlight, the suit was bludgeoned with the legal hammer.  By virtue of stare decisis, the decision has become “black stone” of Kabah mosque that deserves it to be rounded.  Thus, the successive decisions must stick out or observe it religiously while taking decision.

In order not to be overwhelmed by flotsam and jetsam of array of opinions of the critics of the decision of the Supreme Court.  I must point it out explicitly, the mode of the commencement of the suit is a jurisdictional issue.  But it is categorized within a procedural jurisdiction which, in law, can be waived by beneficiary of that right.  The law recognizes that an individual may renounce or waive a law made for his special benefit or protection.  This is encapsulated in the maxim: “quilibet potest renunciate juris prose introducio”.

In actual sense, people scoffed at the pronouncement of the Supreme Court.  The decision has laid to rest the controversy whether technicality is part of the law or not.  It is affirmative response that it is part.  By this era, the question that might naturally flow, is to what extent could that aid the movement of vehicular wheel of justice?  This is “one and many” problem that formed that foundation of controversy among philosophers from the inception of the subject.

It is a notable fact that cannot be down played that Nigeria judicial system straddles the two frontiers – technical justice or substantive justice. The system is at crossroads; the vested responsibility on judges particularly at every strata of any court is to determine every case on its merit.  Notwithstanding the legalism that might have been used to embellish the technical justice, it is backward swing of the pendulum.

  • ODSG drags FG to Supreme court over CBN policies

    by

ONDO STATE GOVERNMENT FILED SUIT AGAINST FEDERAL GOVERNMENT AT THE SUPREME COURT IN RESPECT OF CBN DIRECTIVE ON LIMITATION OF CASH WITHDRAWAL FROM BANKS.

Prayed Supreme Court to stop the implementation of the policy

Filed separate application to join the suit instituted by Zamfara, Kaduna and Kogi states at the Supreme Court on deadline issue by CBN on swapping of Old Naira notes for the New Notes.

Ondo State Government has filed a suit before the Supreme Court of Nigeria, Abuja against the Federal Government in respect of the directive issued through the Central Bank of Nigeria limiting daily cash withdrawals from banks.

In an originating summon filed and signed by the Attorney General of Ondo State, Sir Charles Titiloye Ksm FCArb, on Thursday, Ondo state Government is praying the Supreme Court to stop the implementation of the directive issued by Federal Government through the Central Bank of Nigeria on limitation of daily cash withdrawals from banks which has totally paralysed and brought to a standstill the activities of Ondo state Government and has adversely affected economic and commercial activities in the state.

Ondo state Government contended that the guideline on daily maximum cash withdrawal made by Federal Government is an infraction on the legal rights of Ondo State Government and its citizens to access funds for execution of developmental projects, small credit facilities to petty traders (who have no account in banks) and highly detrimental to daily commercial activities in the state.

Ondo State Government urged the Supreme Court to declare that the Federal Government cannot by directive issued through Central Bank of Nigeria, amend or vary an existing Act of National Assembly particularly Section 2 of Money Laundering Act which relates specifically to limitations on cash withdrawals for individual and Corporate organisation to Five (5) million Naira and Ten (10) million Naira respectively. The updated guidelines issued by CBN now places maximum withdrawal for individual and corporate organisation at N500,000 and Five (5) Million Naira respectively.

Ondo state Government is asking the Supreme Court to decide whether the guidelines issued by Federal Government on maximum daily cash withdrawal and the continuous suffering and hardship caused by the implementation of the said policy is not in conflict with the express provision of section 2 of the Money Laundering Act, Sections 20, 39 and 42 of the Central Bank of Nigeria Act.

Ondo state Government averred that while it has more than 149 Ministries, Departments and Agencies to run on daily basis in a state with more than three (3) million people, less than five hundred thousand people has bank account through which bank transfer can be made. Consequently the policy of the Federal Government has totally paralysed the economy of the state.

Ondo state Government averred that the citizen of Ondo state now spends precious hours at Banks ATM waiting to collect the new Naira note while citizen in the rural areas and villages without Banks and internet facilities have been shut out from receiving or transferring money to meet their daily economic needs

The Government urged the Supreme Court to intervene and stop further implementation of the said Federal Government policy.

In a related case, Ondo state Government filed an application before the Supreme Court seeking to join the suit instituted by Zamfara, Kaduna and Kogi states on the timeframe within which citizens and Government can swap the old Naira Note for the new Naira note. In a motion on notice signed and filed on Thursday 9th of February, 2023, Sir Charles Titiloye Ksm FCArb, the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Ondo State prayed the Supreme Court to join Ondo state Government in the earlier suit filed by the said three states challenging the 10th of February, 2023 deadline for change of Old Naira Notes for New Naira notes by the Central Bank of Nigeria.

The Attorney General noted that Ondo State Government and people are currently experiencing the same excruciating economic and financial hardship occasion by the said incoherent demonetization policy currently introduced by the Federal Government through the Central Bank of Nigeria.

It will be recalled that the Governor of Ondo State, Arakunrin Oluwarotimi Akeredolu SAN recently appealed to President M. Buhari to intervene and stop further implementation of the new Naira Note swap guidelines issued by the Central Bank of Nigeria.
