  • 2023 Election: NUJ Go Tough on Fake Journalists

    by

The Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ, Ondo State Council is aiming to checkmate the influx of quacks into the Pen Profession and curtail the activities of unauthorised persons into the state in the guise of being journalists.

We already have it on good authority that these set of fake journalists always claim to be correspondents or reporters of some media stations based outside Ondo state.

These groups of people are not journalists or media practitioners as they are not employed in any media organisation but continue to constitute themselves into a cartel, going around strategic locations in the state extorting money from unsuspected members of the public.

Therefore, we are urging professional journalists from outside the state to register their presence with the Ondo State Council of the union before going to the field to avoid embarrassment as being tagged as impersonators, or cause a breach of peace as  security operatives in the state have been put on the alert.

We are also asking government officials, especially politicians during this campaign season to be wary of the antics of these unscrupulous elements, by asking questions about their identities and their media stations so as not to fall prey to these quacks who had infiltrated the ranks and files of the profession.

This action is in line with the zero-tolerance stance of the Union under the leadership of the Chairman, Prince Leke Adegbite against quack and fake journalists.

We encouraged all members of the union to support the members of the Task Force to succeed in their assignment while members of the public are advised to call the following numbers of the NUJ Taskforce: 08060532805, 08066596452, 08032649623 – to report activities of any fake journalists caught in the act.

    E-signed:
    Olaoluwa Meshack
    State Secretary, NUJ.

Governor Akeredolu, who had earlier called and sent condolence letter, led the deputy Governor, Hon. Lucky Aiyedatiwa, and other members of the State Executive Council to the Akure family house of Eyitayo Jegede to condole him and other members of his family.

The Governor and his entourage were received by Mr. Jegede, his wife, Mrs Eno Jegede and other family members.

Akeredolu noted that Mama Caroline Jegede departed at a ripe age of 96 years.

He charged the children of the late nonagenarian to thank God for surviving their mother, adding that it is a thing of joy.

He said: “We are not here to mourn with you. We are here to congratulate you. Mama has gone at the ripe age. We should thank God because when we survive our aged parents, we should be grateful.

“All the seven children are here and alive today. We should thank God. The issue is that when God gives us the opportunity, we should thank God. I am here to commiserate and congratulate you on surviving mama.”

Governor Akeredolu assured the PDP chieftain of the support of the state government for the burial ceremony of mama Caroline Jegede.

According to the Governor, Jegede, having served as the Attorney-General of the state, deserves all the respect and support from the state government.

His words: “I want to say that we will be here to support you for the burial. I must note this, when my mother died, you visited me. You came to the house during the wake keep. You were at the church. You have always shown me a lot of respect.

“We have come a long way. Politics can not separate us. You are somebody that I have a lot of respect for. The state should give you a lot of respect and support too. You have served this state.”

Responding, Jegede, who thanked the Governor, his deputy and other members of the State Executive council, described the visit as a great honour.

He said the relationship between him and Governor Akeredolu is beyond politics, adding that he has huge respect for the Governor.

“Let me start by thanking you, sir, for this honour. I know it is out of genuine love and respect. You have always shown me love and respect.

“I thank you. When mama died, you called me. And I later got a letter of condolence from your office. And now you are here personally with the deputy Governor and members of the state executive council. It can’t be more than this. This is a great honour. I do not belong to the APC. But you have honoured me.

“What is happening is beyond politics. I have so much respect for you. You have been President of the Bar, my own President. You have been our leader and you have never disappointed us.

“Politics will come, politics will go. Before politics, we were somewhere. You have made your marks before you came into politics. I thank you for the love you have shown to my family,” Jegede said.

Jegede also informed the Governor that the family has fixed January 27 and 28, 2023 for the final funeral ceremony of his late mother.

  • Senseless Police Killing: Senator Tofowomo writes Buhari, reiterates call for police reform

    by

The Senator representing Ondo South Senatorial District, Nicholas Tofowomo, has called on President Muhammadu Buhari to reiterate his call for meaningful police reform in Nigeria.

Disturbed by the senseless and gruesome extra-judicial killing of innocent Nigerians by the police in the country, the Ondo South Senator said President Buhari still have enough time to set up a committee for immediate police reform.

Tofowomo who lost one of his constituents, Ogunwa Ololade to the stray bullet of SARS operatives who were shooting sporadically while chasing some internet fraudsters called yahoo boys on February 5, 2019, said the president should embark on a police reform conference as a legacy for Nigerians as his administration closes to an end.

Speaking in Abuja on Wednesday over the killing of Barr. Bolanle Raheem, a lawyer, wife and pregnant mother who was allegedly killed by the police on Christmas day, the angry and dissatisfied Lawmaker said, “I thank God that the president has made a very strong statement on the killing of Bolanle Raheem, a lawyer, who was killed in Lagos by the police.

“President Buhari should be aware that I have been agitating for meaningful police reform since I was inaugurated as a member of the 9th senate in 2019. Your Excellency, you still have significant time to set up a police reform conference as a legacy you can leave behind.

“Nigeria police force is still operating an analogue structure while other countries have moved on to digital policing. Between 2019 to date, many lives have been lost to police through unlawful killings in Nigeria that were not given media attention.

“Dear Mr President, Ogunwa Ololade, one of my constituents was killed in 2019 by SARS operatives who were shooting sporadically while chasing some internet fraudsters. Similarly, as an undergraduate at the University of Ife, three of my friends were gunned down before my eyes by the police when we mobilised ourselves on July 7, 1981, to protest the killing of Bukola Arogundade whose head was cut off by unknown assailants. We were going to the palace of the late Ooni of Ife, His Imperial Majesty, Oba Okunade Sijuwade when the police suddenly attacked us on the road and killed three students.

“If it were British police, they will calm down the protesters and address them politely with a promise to investigate their matter, unlike our police that shot sporadically with teargas and live bullets and killed three promising students. This is part of the deficiency of the Nigeria police I am agitating for.

“Mr President, it is not too late to achieve police reform. The incoming president would continue from where you stop since government is a continuum. I appeal to Mr President to call a police reform conference. Nigerians will meet and deliberate on the way forward during the conference and the report will be submitted and your government can start the implementation without delay.

Your Excellency should extend invitation to the Foreign Police as we don’t have effective policing in Nigeria. Our police need training and retraining and I advise such training should be handled by foreign police. There is no shame in inviting an external police agency with the requisite experience to help us out.

“The problem with the Nigeria police is beyond a mere reform on the subject of weapons handling. Our police lack infrastructure, training, required personnel, digital gadgets, basic equipment, needed experience, weapons, and among other things required of digital policing. The articulated programme of action needed to reposition the police is now”, Senator Tofowomo told President Buhari.
